Squacco heron. Even at max extension of the Bigma (~450mm equivalent) the image needed cropping to get to here. You'd think the tour agency would arrange to have these birds closer.

Here's a glossy ibis that could be approached more closely - along a boardwalk in in Florida sanctuary. I could use a tripod and wait until the sun caught on its feathers.

Florida is such a great place for bird photography - lots of variety and closer views for some reason. We are headed down to Sanibel next week - getting anxious because I ordered a new DA*300 F4 and 1.4x teleconverter and they haven't arrived yet. These were taken on our last visit with the DA 55-300

Thanks Noel. Oxpeckers? I spent a couple of years in Malawi in the early 1980s. Saw lots of good stuff but unfortunately my camera equipment was limited to a Mamiya rangefinder camera!

WARNING ABOUT SANIBEL. Since they decided to "restore" the water at Sanibel to its natural state, it has turned more brackish and the the bird population has dropped 80% compared to what it was in the 1990's. It's no longer the dream spot for waterfowl.

wpresto - presume you are talking about the main Ding Darling Reserve - we spend a lot of time there and have no complaints about the birdlife but none of these shots was taken there. Sanibel is also good for shorebirds on the beaches and several other preserves, plus it's a good base for mainland locations like Corkscrew Swamp.

Yes. I never had too much luck away from Ding Darling on Sanibel. Corkscrew is OK, but there are spots on the East side of Florida that IMHO are way better.

A water monitor Lizard-right next to my car -parked at Sunset Dam, Kruger Park. I could easily have touched it.

Glad you didn't try. All those monitors have a bad reputation for short tempers, sharp teeth, and whiplash tails. Here's another fair-sized lizard, very close, with glass or plexiglass between.

What is that? looks dangerous! Your'e right about monitor lizards- once saw people trying to coax one to move, inside a rest camp in Kruger Park, with kids around too. I watched in fear, waiting for it to whip with its tail-alas, it was not to be it was winter if I remember correctly and was trying to get warm. So probably too sluggish te even react.

The bears of Yellowstone Park were infamous from bringing out human stupidity. Parents were actually seen trying to place children on a bear's back for a photo.
