Here's a close relative, although generally called a red-throated diver rather than red-throated loon.

The greatest source of mortality among Peregrines fledged from hacking sites used to re-introduce the species to the Toronto area was...the Great Horned Owl. Granted it was done under cover of darkness. But still, any predator that is willing to take on another fairly large, heavily-armed predator is truly fearsome. Just ask bird banders who have climbed up to Great Horned Owl nests and lived to tell the tale.

There's nothing in the face of a Great Horned that says: "Let's be friends," or "I'd love being your cuddly pet." It's all uncompromising contemptuous ferocity.

Not quite as fearsome as the Great horned owl. In fact quite timid by comparison and smaller too. Wahlberg Eagle
