great picture as usual

thanks for the help in iding the birds.

re: francolin, the guide book I am using: Birds of East Africa: Kenya, Tanzania, Uganda, Rwanda and Burundi by Stevenson and Fanshawe shows the only Francolin with that coloring around the eye is generally located well north and west of where we were. It locates that bird in Uganda.

However I am torn between the yellow-necked and red-neck spurfowl.
I seem to think the Spurfowl are a bit larger. Perhaps WPRESTO can help (nothing quite like asking an American, especially from Messychewbits ) as I recall he posted one from his visit to Tanzania. Have just went back several pages, and if you make you way to pg 264 of this thread, you'll see his image of it. I'll try and copy it here, but if he sues me, you are gonna pay

Problem establishing scale in the field

unfortunately there is nothing to judge the size of the bird

my excuse is that the guide wouldn't let me out of the vehicle, (inside the national parks, we got out of the vehicle only 4 or 5 times as I recall), so I couldn't place a dollar bill down for scale purposes.

I asked the guide to step out of the vehicle, for scale purposes, for these photographs in the Ngorongoro Crater and for some reason, he wouldn't even reply:

The bird pictured by Aslyfox looks like a yellow-throated spur fowl to me. I guess recent legislation here would let me sue, but what is a little copying between friends?

Hippo? I've got hippos. Largely oblivious to us in our beautiful balloon, just at sunrise.

you guys made quite a size jump from the snake

I'll add a small black bird., a larger brown and white bird and a "slightly larger" than the birds crocodile plus the hippos that seem to be required

from the Serengeti National Park Tanzania

I still have quite a few unused images from Kenyan & Tanzania, including hippos. This one was camera shy.
