We first saw a lion and a lioness "getting busy" trying to create more lions when this "third wheel" appeared. He didn't interfere or cause a disturbance but decided to come over to where our vehicle along with 2 or three others were watching.

He visited our vehicles in turn and even decided to take a short nap under ours.

This all occurred in the Ngorongoro Crater in Tanzania

but the photo was uninteresting as we were on the wrong side of the scene

Lions like to take naps in the shade, and cars provide the shade in a savannah with very few trees :

just found out that the "nature" program on PBS stations at 7 PM my time (Central) has a program on dolphins tonight - thirteen spy cameras capture footage of dolphins

Agree, they often look much duller, but with the right light you get some of that beautiful iridescence.

I went out to the Topeka Zoological Park to check out the Wood Ducks and found a "small" surprise:

A Great Blue Heron Ardea herodias [ dark morph ]- our largest and heaviest heron, the first one I have ever seen

the first photo is with the K 3 + HD PENTAX-DA 16-85 mm F3.5-5.6 ED DC WR , it was within 20 feet

by the time I took 3 or 4 photos and then switch lenses, it flew away

both are adults, note the long plumes on the back of the head. the second ( ? ) one was across the pond may be 25 - 40 yards away

I also tried to get some photos as it flew directly over my head

GBH's are very satisfactory birds: big, willing to pose, reasonably colorful. Surprised Aslyfox doesn't see them much at his location. Just about every wetland in Florida will have several.
