Lyrebirds are famous for their beautiful tail feathers, not as well known for being one of the best sound mimics outside of humans, although SFAIK they will not mimic the human voice in the manner of several parrots and macaws.

Quite right. They will imitate machine noises (e.g. chainsaws or cameras), many birds, other animals, but they draw the line at mimicking us!

Amazing Lyre bird, BBC David Attenborough - YouTube
Attenborough's program used recordings of birds which were wild and birds which were not. It seems that they can actually copy humans when in captivity.

Oddly enough I've never heard a wild Australian parrot being a mimic, but even budgies will copy human speech in captivity. I have heard many wild Australian birds performing as mimics; both species of lyrebird, satin bowerbirds, yellow-throated scrubwrens and Crescent Honeyeaters.

Another image of a swamphen/Pukeko. The toes of several marsh birds are really interesting. If they could play a piano, could they reach across the keys to strike chords that are impossible for humans?

I think the New Zealand bird is at least a sub-species? Nice shot! You make me wish I had a good shot showing the claws on a Lotus Bird.

I got some great views of two different Latham's Snipe at Jerrabomberra Wetlands here in Canberra today. Soon they will fly north, to arrive back home in Hokkaido in Japan for the spring.
