Great and Double-crested Cormorant are both still called shag here in Newfoundland, a legacy of West Country (England) fishermen making up a large component of the original settlers. There are many small islands and rocks named after shags all around Newfoundland. There are also a few islands around Newfoundland named after penguins, i.e., the first species to be called penguin before Europeans stumbled upon the Southern Hemisphere: Grand Pingouin (in French), Pinguinus impennis, now known in English as Great Auk. Razorbill is still Petit Pingouin in French, so the species English-speakers call penguins are called manchot or gorfou in French.
Fascinating post. Thanks Pete.
