GRACKLES are native to North America and belong in the family Icteridae, a strictly NA family;
STARLINGS were introduced from Europe into Central Park, NYC (purposely) and belong in the family Sturnidae, which also includes the Asiatic Mynas.

Starlings are particularly aggressive in stealing hole-nesting sites from other species. They are complicit in the decline of North American bluebirds, although not the sole cause (DDT had a major impact, as has loss of suitable nesting holes for other reasons. Starlings are far more flexible and far less fussy than bluebirds about the holes and crevices they are willing to use for nesting).

Starlings have a short tail, straight, yellow bill, pink legs, lanceolate contour feathers, incorporate mimicry in their songs, nest in cavities (including buildings), the sexes are very similar in size, and are in the family Sturnidae.
New World grackles have a long, plicate tail, a longer, black, decurved bill, black legs, rounded tips to their contour feathers, have a tuneless song that sounds like a rusty hinge, nest in marshes, have marked sexual size dimorphism, and are in the Icteridae, the members of which are restricted to the New World. New World grackles are misnamed after the Old World grackles of Africa, which are in the starling family (Sturnidae).

Short billed dowitcher (?someone correct me if I've misidentified this bird - I'm not good with the shorebirds). It had better wipe its feet before coming home.

Starling

Grackle

Look for that purple head on the Grackle.

This time of year, we are seeing a lot of young Grackles.

One of this years crop...

Hey pete
Is this an immature Grackle ( no yellow eye?) or an immature Starling. I have a similar shot labelled s a young starling because of the brown eye, but this guy was hanging out with Grackles. I've seen Starlings hanging out with Grackles before, but this would be the first time I've seen Starling chicks hanging out with Grackle chicks with no adult Starlings present.

I'm not pete-tarmigan and not as good a birder, but I'd say that looks like a young grackle because the beak is heavy or deep at the base and it has a long tail. Starling beaks are more slender and tweezers-like and they have stubby tails

The thing that confuses me is the yellow eye thing, and these birds were with flock of grackles. He was the only brown eyed bird of the bunch and he was about 4 feet away from the other bird.
