Most bulls are often alone and will only join a herd for breeding. Young bulls are also evicted from herds, and this one is a likely candidate.

Yes. Elephant herds are typically under the charge of a matriarch with her sisters, daughters and their youngsters. Male offspring old enough to mate are generally driven out to find their own way.

I knew about the matriarch part but didn't realize the ladies pushed the gents out of the group. Puts an entirely new perspective on images of solitary elephants.
