Hawaiian green sea turtles as with so many Hawaiian endemic species are on the endangered list.* They eat seaweed and they come out of the water onto this rock platform and eat seaweed out of little hollows. This beach is called "Turtle Beach" because the reptiles are here pretty much every day and are very tame. Consequently a simple barrier has been erected to keep humans at a safe distance. It's just a single strip of the plastic tape similar to that used to mark off a crime scene. There also signs warning people to keep back. At least the day we were there everyone we saw was respectful, and swimmers also seemed to be keeping their distance. At one time swimmers were allowed to approach within touching distance, something the turtles didn't seem to notice.
*If you did not see the recent news item, nine endemic Hawaiian birds just got off the "endangered" list and onto the "extinct" list.
