William H Powell acted with Myrna Loy in 14 films, including the Thin Man series. He was nominated for an oscar three times, for The Thin Man, My Man Godfrey, and Life with Father.


William D Powell was the only son of actor William Powell, and was a TV writer including Bonanza, Death Valley, 77 Sunset Strip and Rawhide. He also worked as an assoc producer at WB and Universal, and was an exec at NBC.


Betty Hutton started acting in The Fleet's In, then Star Spangled Rhythm. She costarred with Bob Hope in Let's Face It and was billed above Fred Astaire in Let's Dance. Her greatest role was in Annie Get Your Gun as Annie Oakley.

Johnny Burnette was a rockabilly musician, and founded The Rock and Roll Trio with his brother and a friend. He originally sang You're Sixteen, later covered by Ringo Starr. He was the father of 1980s rockabilly singer Rocky Burnette.


Suzan Ball Long was Lucille's second cousin. She was a singer, then began acting. Multiple leg injuries developed into cancer. After a series of high-profile romances, she married actor Richard Long, and died less than 2 years later.


Sammee Tong had a long list of small acting parts before appearing in the series Bachelor Father, then friend Mickey Rooney's series Mickey. A heavy gambler, and deeply in debt, he committed suicide after Mickey was canceled.

Paul Williams was an architect mainly in Southern California. He designed the homes of numerous stars including Frank Sinatra, Lucille Ball/Desi Arnaz, Lon Chaney, and Charles Correll. He also designed many public and private buildings.


Errett Cord founded the Cord Corporation as a holding company for other companies such as Auburn, Cord, Lycoming; Duesenberg, NY Shipbuilding; Checker Cab; Stinson and American Airways.


Willie Mae Thornton was a singer who sang the original Hound Dog, later popularized by Elvis Presley, and Ball and Chain, popularized by Janis Joplin.

Cesare Cardini was an Italian American restaurateur, chef, and hotel owner, who is credited with creating the Caesar salad.


Robin Harris was a comedian and actor, known for his recurring comic sketch about Bébé's Kids. He was in I'm Gonna Git You Sucka, Do the Right Thing, Mo' Better Blues, and Harlem Nights.


Bebe Campbell was the author of three NY Times bestsellers - Brothers and Sisters, Singing in the Comeback Choir, and What You Owe Me. She also was on NPR radio.

John G Bullock started Bullock's department store in 1907, and later acquired I Magnin. The Bullock's family gate is normally closed, though I found it wide open today :-)




After various acquisitions and reorganizations, Bullock's stores disappeared in 1996.


Tommy Ryan was a welterweight and middleweight champion boxer who fought from 1887-1907. His won-lost record is 86-3-6. He also coached heavyweight champion James J. Jeffries.


Frank Reicher was an actor, director and producer. He played Captain Englehorn in the original King Kong, and was in The Secret Life of Walter Mitty, and Kiss Tomorrow Goodbye.

Ed Townsend was an attorney, songwriter, and producer. He was best known for performing his rhythm and blues doo wop classic "For Your Love," and as the co-writer of "Let's Get It On" with Marvin Gaye.


Frank Lubin was an American-Lithuanian basketball player. He played for the UCLA Bruins from 1928 to 1931 as a 6-foot 7-inch center. He joined the Twentieth Century Fox AAU team, representing the US in the first Olympic basketball tournament in 1936 in Berlin, winning the gold. He then went to Lithuania and became their first national coach. They won the EuroBasket title in 1937 and 1939. Lubin continued to play for the Twentieth Century Fox team until he was 54 years old.


Noble Willingham acted in many TV shows including Walker, Texas Ranger; Home Improvement; Ann Jillian, and the A-Team. His movies included Paper Moon, and City Slickers. He also had an unsuccessful run in politics.

Gail Davis was best known as Annie Oakley in the 1950s TV Western series Annie Oakley. She has a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame and is in the National Cowgirl Museum and Hall of Fame.


Warrene Ott was an actress in the 1960s, and appeared in TV shows such as The Beverly Hillbillies and Bewitched. She shares a family marker.




Walter Field was an actor and stuntman, among other things, and lived to be almost 102 years old.

Forrest Ackerman wrote 50 books, and amassed a 300,000-piece collection of sci-fi, fantasy and horror books and film memorabilia. He was awarded a special Hugo award for his fanaticism.


Carrie Snodgress is probably best remembered for her oscar-nominated role in The Diary of a Mad Housewife, and was in Murphy's Law and Pale Rider.


Jay Ward created Rocky and Bullwinkle, produced Crusader Rabbit, Dudley Do-Right, Peabody and Sherman, Hoppity Hooper, George of the Jungle, Tom Slick, and Super Chicken, plus Fractured Flickers.

Charles Hatfield was a "rainmaker", though he called himself a "moisture accelerator". The 1956 movie The Rainmaker starring Burt Lancaster was based on his story.


Francis de Erdely was renowned in Europe and the US for his powerful figure paintings and drawings. In the 1930s, his art turned toward the effect of war on humanity.


Fay Holden is best known as Mickey Rooney's mother in MGM's "Andy Hardy" films. Her roles include the movies Souls at Sea, Test Pilot, Bitter Sweet, Ziegfeld Girl, Little Miss Big, Samson and Delilah, and The Big Hangover.

Bob Chandler was a football tight end for the Oilers and Raiders, and led the league in receptions over a three-year span. He caught 4 passes in SB XV. He was a non-smoker but died of a rare lung cancer.


The Chandler family plot. He grew up locally.


Rusty Burrell was a bailiff in the trials of Caryl Chessman, Charles Manson, Patty Hearst and other high-profile cases. He was best known as the bailiff on TV's The People's Court.


John St. John was a homicide detective, renowned for investigations of many of LA’s high-profile murders. He held the highest seniority on the LAPD, earning him badge No. 1.

Michael Winkelman was an actor best known as Little Luke McCoy from TVs The Real McCoys. Afterward, Winkelman found few acting jobs and entered the US Navy during the Vietnam War. He was later a groundskeeper at Universal Studios.


Mark Anthony was Bob Hope's personal/business manager for 50 years, and was also a close pal of mobster Jimmy "The Weasel" Frattiano. He was a Navy veteran of World War II.


James Pash was a member of the surf rock group The Surfaris, best known for their 1963 instrumental hit, "Wipe Out". A veteran of the Vietnam War, Pash went on to a somewhat successful solo career.

Jimmie Dodd was an actor and the host of the 1950s The Mickey Mouse Club, and wrote the theme song, The Mickey Mouse Club March.


Marie Wilson acted on radio and movies from the 1930s thru the 70s. She was Irma in "My Friend Irma" in the 50's.


Hal England is best remembered for his roles as 'Waldo' on TV's Bewitched (1964-1972), and as Lt. Douglas Merrill on The Clear Horizon (1960-1962).

Jim Gilliam was a baseball player, and was the 1953 National League Rookie of the Year. He scored over 100 runs in each of his first four seasons. He became one of the first African-American coaches.


Charles Siringo was an American lawman, detective, and agent for the Pinkerton National Detective Agency, and wrote A Texas Cowboy; Or Fifteen Years on the Hurricane Deck of a Spanish Pony.


Syreeta Wright was a Grammy-nominated singer, and first wife of Stevie Wonder.

Rosetta Duncan and her sister Vivian had a popular vaudeville musical-comedy act of Topsy and Eva. They appeared on TV from time to time and recorded Christmas songs.




Clifford Clinton was a restauranteur who founded Meals for Millions, one of two parent organizations of Freedom from Hunger, in 1946. Clifton's Brookdale cafeteria is still going in Los Angeles.

Julius and Philip were twin brothers...

Philip Epstein was a screenwriter and producer, and shared the Best Screenplay oscar for Casablanca with his brother and Howard Koch. Other credits include The Man Who Came to Dinner, Mr. Skeffington, Arsenic and Old Lace, and The Last Time I Saw Paris.


Julius Epstein also was a screenwriter and producer. Other credits include Four Daughters, The Man Who Came to Dinner, The Tender Trap, Light in the Piazza, Send Me No Flowers, and Pete 'n' Tillie.


Leona Gage had a one-day reign as Miss USA of 1957. She lost her crown after it was revealed she lied about her age, marital status, and two children. She briefly dated Franks Sinatra and did some minor acting.
