I follow this thread. I like it. Keep up the good work.

It is nice that you have shown the marker of a true hero. He first tried the vaccine on himself before testing it with others. When asked about if he held the patent on the drug, he replied "Who could patent the sun?"

Thanks for the nice comments :-) Here are some from this weekend.

Woodlawn, Santa Monica.

Janos Prohaska was an actor and stuntman, usually playing the roles of animals or monsters, on The Andy Williams Show, The Outer Limits, Bewitched, I Dream of Jeannie, Lost in Space, Gilligan's Island, and Star Trek.


JB Nethercutt was a chemist for his aunt, Merle Norman, and bought out her cosmetics company. He amassed a legendary automobile collection after winning several concourse d'elegance shows at Pebble Beach.


William Tuttle was the head of makeup at MGM. He worked on Singin' in the Rain, Forbidden Planet, North by Northwest and The Time Machine. He won a special oscar 17 years before the makeup category was designated.

Hughie Mack was an undertaker who was seen sleeping on a bench and hired as another large fat comedian by Vitagraph Pictures. He made over 180 silent movies and shorts.


Florence Lake performed with her vaudeville family as a kid, co-starred in the Edgar Kennedy shorts of the 40s, and was the telephone operator on Lassie. Her father was Arthur Lake of Dagwood Bumstead fame.


Albert "Buddy" Duncan was a short and pudgy actor, teamed with large Lloyd Hamilton in the wildly popular "Ham and Bud" comedies. He ended his career playing sidekicks in Poverty Row westerns.

Hermes Pan was a dancer and choreographer, primarily known as Fred Astaire's collaborator in the musicals starring Astaire and Ginger Rogers. He was oscar-nominated 4 times, winning once.


Harriet Parsons was one of the first women film producers and the daughter of the Hollywood columnist Louella Parsons. She started as a screen and magazine writer, and had her own radio show, Hollywood Highlights.


Ned Washington was a lyricist, nominated for eleven oscars from 1940 to 1962, winning for When You Wish upon a Star (Pinocchio) and High Noon (Do Not Forsake Me, Oh My Darlin') in High Noon.

Sandor Szabo was a Hungarian pro wrestler. In the early 1940s Szabo held three world championships. He also sang a song for Hammerlock Records called Hold Me in Your Arms.


Baron Leone was one of the most popular pro wrestlers of the 50s, and was a contemporary of Gorgeous George. He popularized the sport in the early days of TV. He lived locally in Santa Monica.


John Dawson was a Texas Ranger, then he trail blazed cattle to the western frontier. He owned Dawson Fuel Company, and the town of Dawson NM was named after him.

Jesse Unruh held several public offices for the state of California. He ran for governor and lost to Ronald Reagan in 1970, and ran unsuccessfully for mayor of LA in 1973.


Lion Feuchtwanger was a German-Jewish novelist and playwright. His fierce criticism of the Nazi Party caused him to flee Germany and seek asylum in the US.


Heinrich Mann was an author, and brother of Nobel winner Thomas Mann. His novels attacked the nationalism, militarism, and authoritarian social structure of German life. He settled unhappily in the US after fleeing Hitler's Germany. His second wife committed suicide in 1944. He died in Santa Monica, lonely and without much money, just months before he was to move to East Berlin to become president of the German Academy of Arts. His ashes were later taken to East Germany. (Cenotaph).

Henry Greene was an architect, and designed what came to be known as "ultimate bungalows" such as the famous Gamble House in Pasadena, including all the furniture, light fixtures, carpets, picture frames, linens and silverware.


Frank Johnson was a painter of the American west, and he popularized a style of painting cowboys which became known as "The Johnson Moonlight Technique", using knives, fingers and brushes.

George Patton Sr was a California politician, son-in-law of Benjamin D. Wilson, and father of WWII General George S. Patton Jr.


George Patton Jr led the Third Army though Africa and Europe in WW11 and famously slapped a soldier. He died from complications after a car accident in December 1945. (Cenotaph).


He was nicknamed "The Liberator" for his exploits in WW11. He is actually buried in Luxembourg.

Benjamin Davis Wilson was a California statesman and politician, and father-in-law of General George S. Patton. Mount Wilson, home of an astronomical observatory, is named after him.


Benjamin Davis marker in front, plus more Wilsons.


Cheryl Walker was the Rose Queen for the Tournament of Roses in 1938. Her acting break came as the lead in "Stage Door Canteen". After acting, she became active in the anti-communist movement.

John Edward Hollenbeck was an American businessman and investor who was involved in the 19th century development of Nicaragua and the city of Los Angeles, California.




Jesse Belvin co-wrote the song Earth Angel. He was one of the black performers at the first racially-integrated concert in Little Rock. He and his wife died in a car accident that night.

William G Perry was a LA lumber baron and the first president of the Department of Water and Power. His former home, a Greek Revival, is on display at Heritage Square Museum in Highland Park.




Benjamin Truman was an early LA pioneer and writer. He wrote for the LA Star and the magazine "Overland Monthly" where he would regale his readers about stories of the Civil War and the untamed West.


He is famous for interviewing captured bandit Tiburcio Vasquez. He did what he did best after the interview...he wrote a book: "Tiburcio Vasquez: The Life, Adventures, and Capture of the Great California Bandit".

Mary McCarty acted as a child in some Shirley Temple and Jane Withers movies, and later earned a Tony nomination for her role in the Broadway version of Chicago. She played the dying woman in All That Jazz.


Ramón Novarro was a Mexican actor who was the next male sex symbol after the death of Rudolph Valentino (though Novarro was gay). He was in Scaramouche and Ben-Hur (1925 version), and later acted with Myrna Loy, Joan Crawford and Greta Garbo.


Beatrice Dominguez acted in silent movies, including dancing a tango with Rudolph Valentino in The Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse. She was one of the first Hispanic actresses to get on-screen billing in Hollywood. She died after surgery for peritonitis at age 24.

Louise Beavers acted, mostly as maids and nannies, then had the lead in Imitation of Life, and was one of 4 actresses to play Beulah on that TV sitcom - the first with a black lead. She's buried with her mother.


Ulysses Nunn Sr, known as Bobby, was the original bass vocalist for The Coasters. In 1957 the LA-based group relocated to New York, but Nunn refused to make the move. Nunn-less, the Coasters went on to score seven Top Ten hits.


Matthew Beard played Stymie in the Our Gang shorts. He became a heroin addict, was in and out of prison, cleaned up in the 60's, and had small acting parts from the mid-70's on.

Mabel Normand was a silent film comedienne and actress, working with Charlie Chaplin and Roscoe Arbuckle. She was linked to scandals including the murder of William Desmond Taylor and the shooting of Courtland S. Dines, but never charged.


Henry Gage was a lawyer, politician and diplomat. He was the 20th Governor of California from 1899 to 1903, and later, the U.S. Minister to Portugal.
