Phineas Banning developed much of Los Angeles harbor.


He also co-founded the city of Wilmington and gave land to the Union army for Drum Barracks there, now a state museum.


John Newberry founded and developed the chain of Newberry's grocery stores.

Arline Chase was a dancer who helped popularize "The Shimmy" during the World War I era. She toured vaudeville and was in the Broadway hits Very Good Eddie, Leave It to Jane, and The Night Boat.


She died from tuberculosis at age 25.


Frederic Woodman was president of the Los Angeles board of harbor commissioners, then mayor of LA.

William Lasky, son of producer Jesse L. Lasky, received an oscar nomination for Best Short Subjects, Two Reel for "Boy and the Eagle" (1949).


Lillian Keil was flight nurse and in England treated wounded bomber crewmen. She flew on 425 evac missions, took part in 11 major campaigns, including D-Day, Battle of the Bulge, and in the Korean War.


Born Ronald Plumstead, Skip Young was in radio before his role as Wally, a buddy of the Nelson boys on TVs The Adventures of Ozzie and Harriet, from 1957 to 1966.

John Patterson was a British Army officer, author, and Zion activist. In 1898 he oversaw construction of a railway bridge which was delayed while he had to hunt down man-eating lions. His book was the basis of the 1996 film The Ghost and the Darkness.


Frank Chance was a Hall of Fame baseball player. As player-manager of the Chicago Cubs, he guided them to four NL championships and two World Series wins in 1907 and 1908.


Captain Edward Baker "left cover and, under fire, rescued a wounded comrade from drowning." The new plaque is fairly recent.

Felipe Turich was a dancer, then a theater comedian with his wife Rosa. He acted in Branded, Giant, and The Magnificent Seven.


Michelle Avila was murdered by longtime friends, Karen Severson and Laura Doyle, in a jealous rage over boys, mostly. The book Missy's Murder, by Karen Kingsbury, details her story.


Rosemary LaPlanche was Miss California in 1940 and 1941, and Miss America in 1941. She appeared in films in the 30's and 40's.

Monument to the (mostly) Japanese-American 442nd battalion of WWII. The movie Gung Ho! was based on the unit's exploits.




Sadao Munemori was the first MOH recipient from the unit. He smothered a grenade to protect fellow soldiers. He has the interchange of the 105 and 405 freeways in Los Angeles named after him.


Joe Hayashi earned a MOH which was upgraded from a Purple Heart in a White House ceremony in 2000. He had volunteered before the attack of Pearl Harbor.

Tony Beckley was a British actor, appearing in Chimes at Midnight, Revenge of the Pink Panther, and the Italian Job. He starred only in The Fiend, and his last role was in When A Stranger Calls.


Charlie Allen was a co-founder and singer for the blues and rock group Pacific Gas & Electric. He co-wrote Are You Ready?, a hit for PG&E, and covered by The Staple Singers.

Keefe Brasselle was an actor, producer and author. He played the role of Eddie Cantor in the Eddie Cantor Story. He later produced TV failures including The Baileys of Balboa, The Cara Williams Show and The Reporter.


Frederick Brisson was a film and theater producer, and husband of actress Rosalind Russell, whose grave is in the background.


Norman Foster acted in Prosperity, Pilgrimage, Rafter Romance, State Fair, Strictly Dynamite, Ladies Crave Excitement, Mr. Moto Takes a Vacation, and he also did some directing. He was married to Claudette Colbert for seven years.

Marie Callender began baking and selling pies to restaurants in 1948. Her son eventually started the chain of (eventually) 250 Marie Callender restaurants, and brand of (mostly) frozen dinners.



Holy Cross, San Diego.

Area local Andrew Cunanan was a serial killer whose 5 victims included fashion designer Gianni Versace. He killed himself in Miami.

Raymond Chandler worked as an oil company exec, then began writing detective fiction, most notably The Big Sleep, made into a movie with Humphrey Bogart and Lauren Bacall.


This "footstone" now has the name of his wife who was relocated here in 2011, after her ashed were discovered haphazardly stored elsewhere.

Isabel Bigley won a Tony for her stage role in Guys and Dolls, and later with her husband founded the ALS Association to fund research scientists, and started a graduate program at Ohio St Univ.


Dorothy Patrick had a long career acting in TV shows such as Sky King, Racket Club, The Lone Ranger, My Little Margie, and the Schlitz Playhouse.


Renie Riano started in vaudeville as Baby Irene. In movies, she played shrill, viper-tongued wives, domestics, and other similar parts. She was the maid Effie in the Nancy Drew series, and Maggie in Bringing Up Father.

Sue Hamilton was the April 1965 Playmate of the Month as Sue Williams. She acted in How to Stuff a Wild Bikini, Sergeant Dead Head, Dr. Goldfoot and the Bikini Machine, The Ghost in the Invisible Bikini and Fireball 500 before her suicide.


Bartine Burkett starred with Buster Keaton in The High Sign in 1920, and subsequently acted with Gloria Swanson, Stan Laurel, Oliver Hardy and Lon Chaney. She retired in 1928, and unretired some 40 years later, showing up on TV shows and commercials.


Snub Pollard starred in a series of one- and two-reel shorts, including 1923's It's a Gift, in which he plays an inventor of many Rube Goldberg-like contraptions, including a magnet-powered car.

George Baker was a cartoonist, creator of "The Sad Sack", a dimwitted soldier, which became the image of the downtrodden G.I. doomed to perpetrate a losing battle with his top sergeants.


Bill Burrud was a child actor in the 1930s, and later produced and hosted TV nature/travel documentaries in the 70s and 80s.


Robert Karvelas was the cousin of actor Don Adams, and is best remembered as "Larrabee" on TVs "Get Smart".

Dr. Lawrence Kavanau was an aerospace engineer, and in 1961, President Kennedy appointed him as Special Asst to Space and co-chairman of a task force, making design, tech and policy recommendations for what was to become the Apollo program.


Cyd Charisse was an actress, starting in the 1940s. Her roles usually focused on her abilities as a dancer, and she was paired with Fred Astaire and Gene Kelly. Films include Singin' in the Rain, The Band Wagon, and Silk Stockings. She stopped dancing in films in the late 1950s, but continued acting in film and on TV. Husband Tony Martin was an actor and singer, including a stint with the Glenn Miller orchestra.

Rosa Raisa was a dramatic operatic soprano considered by Enrico Caruso as the "greatest dramatic soprano in the world". She married a baritone, Giacomo Rimini.


Walter Catlett started in vaudeville, went into opera, and then acting. He usually played excitable officious blowhards. He was in Yankee Doodle Dandy, Bringing Up Baby, and Mr Deeds Goes To Washington.
