Elizabeth Short is the famous murder victim nicknamed the Black Dahlia for her dark hair and flowers she often wore. (The movie The Blue Dahlia had been recently released). Her murder is unsolved.

Note to Magkelly: she was the only grave in this section with flowers.


James Folger founded the Folger's Coffee Company in 1860. Previously he had worked in reconstructing both Nantucket and San Francisco after city fires.


Domenico Ghirardelli tried and failed at mining, then opened a tent-store selling various supplies and confections to miners. He expanded another store and hotel in San Francisco, then formed Ghirardelli Chocolate Co.

Warren Bechtel was the founder of the Bechtel Corporation, one of the world's largest engineering and construction services firms. He started as an employee in the early US railroad industry in 1898 after his Oklahoma cattle ranch failed.


Bernard Maybeck is most famous for designing buildings for the 1915 Panama Pacific Exposition in San Francisco, of which only the domed Palace of Fine Arts survives.


David Colton was vice-president of the Southern Pacific Railroad and financial director of the Occidental & Oriental Steamship Company. A city in southern California is named for him.

Sally Rand was a burlesque dancer and actress, most noted for her ostrich feather fan dance and balloon bubble dance.


Roger Freed was a MLB outfielder and pinch hitter. He played between 1970-1979 for five different teams. He was batting .402 over 49 games in 1977, but grounded out in the last game, finishing at .398.

Maxine Hirsch was an actress, and hosted the TV interview show Hidden Talents with guests such as actress Barbara Billingsley and the Dalai Lama. (no supporting info).


John Eldredge acted in High Sierra, Angels in the Outfield, and on TVs Topper, Wild Bill Hickok, Cowboy G-Men, Meet Corliss Archer, Superman, and the Loretta Young show.


Jeanne Carmen was a model, pin-up girl, trick-shot golfer, and B movie actress. She left Hollywood, perhaps encouraged by the mob, after Marilyn Monroe's death.

Robert Ripley was a cartoonist, entrepreneur and amateur anthropologist. He created the world famous Ripley's Believe It or Not! newspaper panel series, radio show, and TV show.


His subjects ranged from sports feats to little known facts about unusual and exotic sites. He also included reader submissions such as oddly shaped vegetables - believe it or don't.

Arthur Edeson was a cinematographer on Robin Hood, The Thief of Bagdad, and The Lost World in the 20's, and Frankenstein, The Old Dark House, and The Invisible Man in the 30's. Nominated for 3 oscars.


Horace Heidt was a pianist, big band leader, and radio and TV personality. He toured vaudeville, and performed through the 1930s and 40s. He appeared as himself in Pot O' Gold.


Kay Kuter acted in The Last Starfighter, Warlock, Gross Anatomy, and Forbidden Warrior. TV included Bonanza, Perry Mason, Gunsmoke, Star Trek: TNG and DS9, ER, Charmed, and Seinfeld. He voiced Hershey's Kisses ads for 14 years.

Truman Bradley was an actor and narrator in radio, TV and film. He beganas a radio broadcaster, and moved into voice acting and narration. He was the host of the 1950s TV series Science Fiction Theatre.


Edward Reichard won multiple oscars in the Scientific/Technical catagory, and is responsible for the color proofing printer for motion pictures.


Pete King was a composer and conductor for movies of the 1950s-70s, and for TV's Happy Days. He composed The Mood I'm In, A Night Out, The Wide Open Spaces, The Breaking Point, Whim of Fancy and Lovers Rhapsody.

Jay Stewart was a TV and radio announcer on Let's Make A Deal, Scrabble, Sale of the Century, The Joker's Wild, Bullseye and Tic-Tac-Dough. Depression and alcohol after his daughter's suicide led to his own a few years later.


Dee Carroll acted in Bonanza, The Virginian, Petticoat Junction, and 80+ episodes of Days of Our Lives soap opera.


Victor Rivers was with Joey Chitwood Auto Thrill Show before becoming a stuntman in Moving Violation, Grand Theft Auto, and Hi-Riders. He drowned in a stunt vehicle before help arrived.

John Larch was Captain Starr of Space on radio, was on The Twilight Zone as the doctor of the man who would die if he fell asleep, was the chief of police in Dirty Harry, and the prosecutor in Airplane II.


Iwao Takamoto was an animator, TV producer, and film director. He was the production and character designer for Disney's Sleeping Beauty, and Hanna-Barberas cartoon Scooby-Doo.


Stanley Cortez was a cinematographer on The Magnificent Ambersons, The Night of the Hunter, The Three Faces of Eve, Shock Corridor and The Naked Kiss.

Donald Durant was a Las Vegas singer, and actor best known as the sheriff on TVs Johnny Ringo. He also taught actors to ride horses and shoot guns, and helped build early sound equipment for Warner Bros.


Bijan Pakzad was an Iranian designer of menswear and fragrances. He also designed a 24k gold Colt revolver. He had a large collection of expensive cars.


Ralph Smedley was the founder of Toastmasters International, a speaking and communication-improvement organization with more than 235,000 members in 106 countries.

Tommy Raft was a comic performer and a main attraction in Las Vegas. He also appeared in The Wacky Playboy, and The Black Connection.


Wild Bill Elliott was an actor, specializing in rugged heroes of B-Westerns, particularly in the Red Ryder series.


Russ Morgan was a big band orchestra leader and arranger during the 1930s and 1940s. He was a co-composer of You're Nobody til Somebody Loves You, and the first to record it.

Edward Everett Horton acted in The Gay Divorcee, Lost Horizon, Arsenic and Old Lace, Lady on a Train, The Red Skelton show, and as medicine man Roaring Chicken on F-Troop. Narrated Fractured Fairy Tales on Rocky and Bullwinkle.


Constantin Bakaleinikoff was a composer with the LA Philharmonic, then for movie scores, including Hitchcock's Notorious. Oscar nominated for Something to Sing About, The Fallen Sparrow, and None But the Lonely Heart.


Constantin's brother, Misha Bakaleinikoff was a musical director, film composer and conductor. Movies include Lost Horizon, Hellcats of the Navy, Earth vs. the Flying Saucers, and Jane Eyre.

Claude Binyon was the journalist who wrote Variety's famous 1929 headline 'Wall Street Lays An Egg'. He subsequently wrote screenplays and directed several movies.


Edward Curtis was a photographer of the American West and of Native American peoples. Over 2400 images are in the Library of Congress.

Robert Beck was a pimp for 24 years, but after time in prison, turned to writing as Iceberg Slim, including an autobiographical novel Pimp: The Story of My Life. He also has an album of poetry called Reflections.


Art Acord acted in silent westerns, and was a rodeo champ. After his career faded, he tried mining in Mexico where died from cyanide poisoning - either a suicide, or murder by the Mexican politician who found him with his wife.


Joe Grant was a newspaper cartoonist, then joined Walt Disney in 1933. He wrote the original story for Dumbo, and contributed to Pinocchio, Snow White, and Fantasia. After woking as an independent, he returned to Disney in the 90's.

Tamara Toumanova was a ballerina. She lived in refugee camps in Russia, Shanghai and Cairo before settling in Paris. Her first film was Days of Glory, also Gregory Peck's first film.


Al Christie started at the Nestor studio, which later moved with him and some staff to California, and started the first Hollywood studio in 1911. Al started his own Christie Film Co in 1917.


Truman Van Dyke was a silent-film star, whose thick Southern drawl ended his acting career with the arrival of talkies. He went into insurance, handling Hollywood entertainers.
