Brandon Tartikoff was head of programming at NBC, then chairman of Paramount Pictures before starting his own company. He died in his 3rd battle with Hodgkin's disease.


Lotus Weinstock, was a stand-up comedian and author of a popular book of anecdotes, "The Lotus Position." She was engaged to comedian Lenny Bruce.


Hillel Slovak was an Israeli-American musician best known as the original guitarist and founding member of the Los Angeles rock band Red Hot Chili Peppers. He died from a heroin overdose.


The woman I met here before told me she had touched it up...


Ellen Naomi Cohen is better known as singer Cass Elliot of "The Mamas and the Papas" with hits such as "California Dreamin'", "Monday Monday", "Words of Love", and "Dream a Little Dream of Me".

Actress Shelley Winters was Robert Mitchum's drowned wife in "The Night of the Hunter", and the mother in Kubrick's "Lolita". She was a 4-time Oscar nominee with 2 supporting actress wins.


Actor Vic Morrow is probably best known as Sgt Saunders in "Combat". He and 2 child actors were killed while making "The Twilight Zone" movie when a helicopter crashed on them. His daughter is actress Jennifer Jason Leigh.


One of The Three Stooges, Moe Howard.

Danish actor and humanitarian Jean Hersholt helped translate Hans Christian Andersen stories. The statue is of a HCA character. A humanitarian award is named after him.


Famous anti-evolution evangelist Aimee McPherson packed the halls during the 1930s. She famously went missing and claimed she was kidnapped, though she emerged from the Mexican desert little worse for wear. The Foursquare church was carried on by her son and has over 8 million followers.


L. Frank Baum wrote "The Wizard of Oz".

On a cemetery tour (which explains that man). He died young in a fight over $50.


The Arthur Letts mausoleum. He founded Broadway and Bullocks department stores, and was a local real estate developer.


The Clark family mausoleum. J Ross was a businessman, and president of the LA chamber of commerce.


Hattie McDaniel was the first black person to win an oscar, for her role in "Gone With the Wind". This is a cenotaph because at the time of her death, the cemetery did not allow blacks.

Various types of alcohol can sometimes be found on his marker.


Griffith J. Griffith obelisk. He donated land that became Griffith Park in LA. He also shot his wife and spent time in San Quentin. After his death, LA reversed its previous refusal and accepted his money for the Griffith Observatory.




Cecil B. DeMille directed "Samson and Delilah", "The Greatest Show on Earth", and "The Ten Commandments". He faces toward Paramount Pictures studios, on the other side of the wall in the background.

In 1939, actress Janet Gaynor married middle-husband costume designer Gilbert Adrian. This is somewhat odd because he was openly gay, but the wedding was probably due to studio pressure. She earned the first Best Actress oscar.


Actress Virginia Rappe died from a ruptured bladder and peritonitis 4 days after attending a party given by actor Roscoe 'Fatty' Arbuckle.




Marion Davies (born Douras) was newspaper publisher William Randolf Hearst's mistress for 30 years.


Her large mausoleum spells her Greek family name with a 'V'.

Ironically, Power died of a heart attack shortly after doing a public-service announcement about recognizing signs of them.


Singer Nelson Eddy was often paired with Jeanette MacDonald in musicals such as Naughty Marietta, Rosalie, The Chocolate Soldier, and Make Mine Music.


He is now in the shadow of a large monument.


Harry Cohn was head of Columbia Pictures, and reportedly the most-hated man in Hollywood.

Make up artist Ernest Westmore earned an Oscar for an "extraordinary accomplishment" in 1931 for "Cimarron". The "make-up" Oscar did not appear until 1981.


Another Art Deco Society guide discusses William Deane-Tanner, an actor and director in early films. His murder in 1922, when he was known as William Desmond Taylor, is still unsolved.




Actor Peter Lorre starred in "M", and was in "The Maltese Falcon" and "Casablanca".


About 100,000 mourners attended early-film star Rudy Valentino's funeral in New York.

He is most famous for his role of Maxwell Smart in TV's "Get Smart". After being wounded in WWII, he became a Marine drill sergeant.


Actress Estelle Getty found "overnight fame" at the age of 62, on TV's "The Golden Girls", playing Bea Arthur's mother.

Actor George Reeves frequented the Pasadena Playhouse. He was TV's Superman, the part and pay of which he was not too thrilled. He died of a gunshot to the head, officially ruled a suicide.




Actor Raymond Vitte appeared in Carwash, and TV's That's My Mama, Doc, What's Happenin', and co-starred in The Quest. He spent most of his last day inexplicably screaming and yelling at home and died in the back of a police car.


Local resident Matthew Robinson finished 2nd to Jesse Owens in the 200-meter dash in the 1936 Olympics. He was the brother of baseball player Jackie Robinson.


Herbert W. Armstrong founded Worldwide Church of God in the 30's and was a radio and TV evangelist with an audience of millions.

Known as actor Jack Soo, he is most famous as Det. Yemana on TV's Barney Miller. His character always made bad coffee. Legend has is that Jack's dying words to co-star Hal Linden before undergoing surgery were...it must have been the coffee.


Wally George was an abrasive right-wing TV-show personality, famous for yelling at call-in viewers.


Ronnie Dio was a heavy-metal singer who performed with Elf, Rainbow, Black Sabbath, Heaven & Hell, and his own band Dio.


Jeffrey Porcaro was a session drummer with many bands, and a founding member of Toto.
