Charles Von der Ahe opened a cash and carry store named Von's Groceteria in Los Angeles in 1906. The chain reached 87 stores by 1928, when he sold it. In 1932 his sons Ted and William re-entered the business, founding the Von's Grocery Company.


Actress Helen Kleeb played Mamie Baldwin on TVs The Waltons, and was in Kansas City Confidential, The Desperate Hours, The Manchurian Candidate, Hush...Hush Sweet Charlotte, The Fortune Cookie, and The Party.


Actor Frank Maxwell was Dan Rooney on General Hospital and had roles in Our Man Higgins, The Second Hundred Years, Felony, The FBI and MASH.

Jim Murray was a sportswriter and co-founder of Sports Illustrated. He worked at the LA Times for 37 years and earned a Pulitzer Prize and 14 Sportswriter of the Year awards.


Gloria Morgan Vanderbilt is the mother of fashion designer Gloria Vanderbilt, and grandmother of TV journalist Anderson Cooper. She lost a famous custody battle for her daughter in 1934. She is buried with twin sister, Thelma, the Viscountess Furness.


Evelyn Nesbit was an artists' model and chorus girl, noted for her entanglement in the murder of her ex-lover, architect Stanford White, by her first husband, Harry Kendall Thaw. The movie Girl In the Red Velvet Swing is based on this event.

Slapsie Maxie Rosenbloom was the light-heavyweight boxing champ from 1930-34. He later acted and operated nightclubs. His nickname was from his punching style.


Sam McDaniel was mostly uncredited in over 200 movies, and was oscar-winner Hattie McDaniels' brother.

Jerry Scoggins was the lead singer of the western band The Cass County Boys in the 1930s. He sang The Ballad of Jed Clampett for TVs The Beverly Hillbillies, and subsequent movie.

Artie Shaw was a clarinetist considered on par with Benny Goodman. He is also famous for his marriages to Lana Turner, Ava Gardner, Evelyn Keyes, and Kathleen Winsor. After music, he concentrated on writing short fiction.


Joel Hirschhorn, with Al Kasha, won Academy Awards for the theme The Morning After from The Poseidon Adventure and We May Never Love Like This Again from The Towering Inferno, and nominations for Candle on the Water for Pete's Dragon.

Kevin Mark DuBrow was the lead singer of the heavy-metal group Quiet Riot. He OD'd on cocaine.


Bobby Hatfield was half of the singing duo The Righteous Brothers.


He also died from cocaine.

Frank Tallmann was a pilot, and flew stunts in movies. Eventually breaking then losing a leg, he continued to fly. He crashed in bad weather on nearby Mt San Jacinto.


Paul Mantz was also an airplane pilot, and flew many stunts in movies. He crashed and died while flying the plane used in The Flight of the Phoenix, a job originally scheduled for Frank Tallmann.


Bob Wian started with a 10-stool diner and eventually had more than 1,000 "Bob's Big Boy" restaurants, famous for introducing the double-decker hamburger.

Director Robert Webb made Beneath the 12-Mile Reef, and Love Me Tender with Elvis Presley.

Louis B Mayer was the head of the Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer movie studio.


Jerry Mayer was a deep sea diver, owned a salvage company, a city railroad company, a brass foundry and a steel company before joining his brother Louis's movie business, eventually becoming a studio manager.


Rudolph Mayer was the black sheep of the Mayer family. He swindled investors in worthless land deals, and sold stock in a fictitious movie studio, among other things.

David "Davie the Jew" Berman was a mobster in Iowa, New York City, and Minneapolis. He was also one of the pioneers of gambling in Las Vegas, and a partner with Bugsy Siegel at the Flamingo Hotel.


Susan Berman was a reporter and author, and daughter of mobster Dave Berman. She wrote extensively about her late realization of her father's place in a criminal empire, and was murdered execution style on Christmas Eve.

Kurt Neumann directed 68 mostly B-grade movies including Tarzan and the She-Devil, and Rocketship X-M. His biggest hit was 1958's The Fly, though he died just after its premiere and before the general release.


Mack Gordon was a composer and lyricist, nominated for best original song Oscar nine times, including six consecutive years from 1940 to 1945, winning for "You'll Never Know".

Actually, he sang this with Flatt and Scruggs playing the music.
