Cathy O'Donnell was an actress whose first major film role was in 1946's The Best Years of Our Lives, playing Wilma Cameron, the high-school sweetheart of Navy veteran Homer Parrish. She may be best remembered for her film-noir roles such as They Live By Night (1949), Side Street (1950), and The Miniver Story (also 1950). She appeared with James Stewart in The Man from Laramie (1955). Her final film role was in Ben-Hur (1959). TV included Perry Mason, The Rebel, and Man Without a Gun. Her last appearance was in a 1964 episode of Bonanza. At age 24 she married 47 year old Robert Wyler, brother of director William Wyler. She died on her 22nd wedding anniversary.


During World War I, George Meehan was a cinematographer in the US Army, and went on to film Mary of the Movies (1923), Ben Hur: A Tale of the Christ (1925), The Ghost Talks (1929) Back to the Woods (1937), The Big Chance (1933), Inside Information (1934), Tarzan’s Revenge (1938), Riders of Black River (1939), The Wildcat of Tucson (1940), and Beyond the Sacramento (1940) among his 167 credits.


Paul Sawtell was a film score composer, working on many western and horror films, including the Sherlock Holmes films The Pearl of Death and The Scarlet Claw. He and Bert Shefter collaborated on Kronos, It! The Terror from Beyond Space, Return of the Fly, The Lost World, Voyage to the Bottom of the Sea, and Jack the Giant Killer. His best-known work may be the theme for the TV version of Voyage to the Bottom of the Sea which was different than that of the movie.

George Strange was an actor, mostly in Western films. He may be best remembered for playing Frankenstein's monster in three films during the 1940s, and for his role as Sam Noonan, the popular bartender, in 233 episodes of TV's Gunsmoke. He also appeared in several episodes each of The Lone Ranger, Judge Roy Bean, The Rifleman, Annie Oakley, Death Valley Days, and The Life and Legend of Wyatt Earp.


George Elliott Sweet was an oilman and author. He founded Sweet Geophysical Co. in Malibu in 1940, which located several major oil deposits. Sweet published eight books, including "The History of Geophysical Prospecting", "Gentleman in Oil" and "The Petroleum Saga." Sweet also helped found Southern California's Shakespeare Authorship Roundtable, and was a proponent of the theory that Shakespeare's plays and poems were actually written by Queen Elizabeth. He set out the theory in his book "Shakespeare: The Mystery."


Paul Walker IV was an actor, whose early work includes the teen films She's All That and Varsity Blues. He is best known for his role as Brian O'Conner in 2001's street racing action film The Fast and the Furious. He played that role in five of the next six installments, but in the middle of filming Furious 7 in 2013, he died as a passenger in his new-to-him Porsche on bad tires, driven by his business partner. He founded the disaster-relief charity Reach Out Worldwide in response to the 2010 Haiti earthquake.

Angelus-Rosedale, Los Angeles.

William Nickerson Jr. was a prominent Los Angeles-based businessman and founder of Golden State Mutual Life Insurance Company, which at one time was the largest black-owned business west of the Mississippi. The Nickerson Gardens housing development in Los Angeles is named after him.


Andriamanantena Paul Razafinkarefo was a poet, composer, and lyricist, famous for "Ain't Misbehavin'" and "Honeysuckle Rose". His pregnant mother fled to the US when France invaded Madagascar in the 1890's. At the age of 16 he quit school and took a job as an elevator operator at a Tin Pan Alley office building. A year later he penned his first song text, embarking on his career as a lyricist. During this time he would spend many nights in the Greyhound Lines bus station in Times Square and would pick up his mail at the Gaiety Theatre office building which was considered the black Tin Pan Alley. In 1972, Razaf was recognized by his Tin Pan Alley peers in the Songwriters Hall of Fame.


Art Tatum was an American jazz pianist, widely considered one of the greatest jazz pianists of all time. His performances were hailed for their technical proficiency and creativity, which set a new standard for jazz piano virtuosity. Tatum learned to play by ear, picking out church hymns by the age of three, learning tunes from the radio and copying piano roll recordings his mother owned. Popular hits include "Tea for Two" and "Tiger Rag. (Cenotaph of original location, he's now in the Great Mausoleum at FL Glendale).

Jerry Ayres was an actor, known for General Hospital, Mame, and Message to My Daughter. He also appeared in 2 episodes of Star Trek TOS. His last credit was in 35 episodes of The Bold and the Beautiful through 1990.


Walter Grauman was a director of stage shows, films and TV shows. After WWII, Grauman eventually took a job as stage manager at NBC studios, then moved into directing and producing. His TV credits include The Untouchables, The Fugitive, Route 66, The Streets of San Francisco, The Twilight Zone, Barnaby Jones, and Murder She Wrote. He directed the film 633 Squadron. He was a distant relative of Sid Grauman, the theater owner.


Louis Jourdan was a French actor, known for his suave roles, including The Paradine Case, Letter from an Unknown Woman, Three Coins in the Fountain, Gigi, The Best of Everything, The V.I.P.s, Julie, and Octopussy. In 1938, director Marc Allegret hired him to work as an assistant camera operator on Entrée des Artistes (The Curtain Rises). His first film, Le Corsaire in 1939 opposite Charles Boyer, was interrupted by the WWII and never resumed. He spent time in the French Resistance printing and distributing illegal leaflets. After the liberation of France in 1945, he returned to Paris with his childhood sweetheart (and later, wife), nicknamed Quique. He played Dracula in the 1977 BBC TV production Count Dracula, and appeared as a murderous chef on US TV's Columbo in 1978. His last film role was in Year of the Comet (1992). Jourdan has two stars on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.

Eddie Fetherston appeared, mostly uncredited, more than forty times on the screen as a reporter, a newspaperman, a news or cinema operator or photographer - though he started in vaudeville comedy. Over 200 appearances include 13 Three Stooges films, True to the Navy (1930), Scarface, Charlie Chan at the Race Track, Kid Galahad, Topper, Flying G-Men, Meet Boston Blackie, Meet John Doe, It's a Wondeful Life (1946), The Babe Ruth Story, and his last role as a townsman in The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn (1960).


Duke Green has 61 acting credits, including minor roles in King Kong, Call of the Wild, Bringing Up Baby, Beau Geste, Perils of Nyoka, They Were Expendable, Mighty Joe Young, Earth vs the Flying Saucers, and Donovan's Reef. He has 78 credits as a stunt man, including in Don Juan, King Kong, Call of the Wild, Dick Tracy Returns, Submarine Patrol, Dodge City, Wake Island, Drums of Fu Manchu, They Were Expendable, Joan of Arc, and The Great Race.


Mike Lally was an actor, mostly in small supporting roles, with 340 credits including Citizen Kane, Singin' in the Rain, Kid Galahad, The Ballad of Josie, The Sting, and Coma. On TV, he appeared on The Twilight Zone, Twin Detectives, Future Cop. He was in 24 episodes of Columbo in various bits such as crime-scene photographer or cab driver, but also had some speaking roles.

Mona Bruns was an actress on the stage, films, radio, and TV, best known for her TV roles on Dr. Kildare, Little House on the Prairie, Green Acres and Bonanza.


Tony Giorgio was an actor, known for his portrayal of Bruno Tattaglia in The Godfather. He also appeared in Magnum Force, American Me, The Sting II, and Cop Land.


Norman Hall was a screenwriter with 93 credits from the 1940s-60s, including 1933's The Three Musketeers, 1937's Secret Agent X-9, Jungle Jim, and Radio Patrol, 1939's Buck Rogers, 1940's Adventures of Red Ryder, and 1951's Gene Autry and The Mounties, and 6 episodes of TV's Annie Oakley in 1954.

Hollywood Forever.

Louise Emmons worked for some time as a portrait artist. Her birth year varies by 20 years, but she started acting late in life when she made her first silent film in 1914. With "the kind of face that could stop a clock", she appeared in over 65 films until 1935, mostly in small, but memorable roles specializing in playing old hags, including the evil headmistress from the Our Gang film Mush and Milk (1933). Her last film was the horror movie Mark of the Vampire (1935), where she played an old gypsy. Her unmarked grave got a marker in March 2014.


Nolan Leary was a character actor in silent and talking films. Leary began his career entertaining US troops stationed in France during World War I, and went on to play vaudeville. Early silent films were Westerns, filmed on Staten Island, including Arizona Desert, and Sharkey's Last Game. Later, he had small parts in Make Way for Tomorrow, Ten North Frederick, Pollyanna, White Heat, All the King's Men, High Noon, The Lemon Drop Kid, and Sweet Charity. TV included Perry Mason, Lassie, The Waltons, Bonanza, and The Streets of San Francisco.


Walter Long was an actor in early films. He appeared in many DW Griffith films, including Intolerance, and The Birth of a Nation, where he appeared in black-face as Gus, an African American. Long also worked with Rudolph Valentino in the films The Sheik, Moran of the Lady Letty, and Blood and Sand. He later was a comic villain in four Laurel and Hardy films during the early 1930s. He was in WWI and rose to Lt Colonel in WWII. He died of a heart attack while watching 4th of July fireworks at the LA Coliseum.

Claire James was Miss California in 1938 and finished First Runner-Up in the 1938 Miss America pageant. She acted in 42 roles, including in Jack Armstrong (1947), Voodoo Man (1944) and Hop Harrigan America's Ace of the Airways (1946). She had brief marriages to musical producer Busby Berkeley, Raymond Dorsey, William Girard, and lastly, Dr. Peter L. Hoffman.


Reynaldo Rey, Harry Reynolds, was an actor, comedian, and TV personality. He started his career in comedy, on the road with the musical group, the O'Jays. He then joined the Harlem Theater Group, appeared in his first of 52 movies, then performed in Europe, Asia and Africa for 2 years. Films include Friday, House Party 3, White Men Can't Jump, A Rage in Harlem, and Harlem Nights. TV included 18 episodes of "227".


Layne Tom Jr. played a different son of Charlie Chan in three movies - as Charlie Chan, Jr in "Charlie Chan at the Olympics", as Tommy in "Charlie Chan in Honolulu", and "Willie" in "Charlie Chan's Murder Cruise". He also appeared in The Good Earth, The Hurricane, Mr. Smith Goes to Washington, and Lady of the Tropics. He then served in the US Navy, and graduated from USC with a degree in architecture. He designed the flagship Bank of America building in Los Angeles' Chinatown, among other buildings. His only return to show-biz was The Barbara Stanwyck show in 1960 and 2 Charlie Chan short documentaries in 2006.

Art Aragon was a native of Belen, New Mexico, but grew up in East Los Angeles. He was married four times and engaged a fifth time, and was romantically linked to Marilyn Monroe, Jayne Mansfield and other Hollywood starlets. He also had a friendship with WWII hero turned Western star Audie Murphy. He had 21 film and TV credits between the 1950s and 1970s, including as himself in the boxing films The Ring and Off Limits, and he played Private Sanchez in the 1955 film To Hell and Back. Aragon won his first 11 matches and retired in 1960 with a record of 90 wins (61 by KO), 20 losses, and 6 draws. After retiring from boxing, Aragon went into the bail bonds business.


Donald Rickles was a stand-up comedian, actor, voice actor and author. He studied at the American Academy of Dramatic Arts and then played bit parts on television. Frustrated by a lack of acting work, he began performing comedy in clubs in New York, Miami, and Los Angeles. He became known as an insult comedian after responding to his hecklers and calling them "hockey pucks". The audience enjoyed these insults more than his prepared material, so he incorporated them into his act. His prominent film roles included Run Silent, Run Deep (1958), Kelly's Heroes (1970), and the Beach Party films (his agent was married to Annette Funicello). On TV he starring in The Don Rickles Show and the TV sitcom CPO Sharkey, and had guest appearances on The Dick Van Dyke Show, The Munsters, The Addams Family, The Mothers-in-Law, Gilligan's Island, Get Smart, The Twilight Zone, The Andy Griffith Show, and I Dream of Jeannie. He was a popular guest on The Dean Martin Show, The Tonight Show, and the Late Show with David Letterman. He voiced Mr. Potato Head in the Toy Story series of films. He won an Emmy for the 2007 documentary Mr. Warmth: The Don Rickles Project.


Joseph Wapner was a judge and TV personality on The People's Court from 1981 to 1993. He was appointed by Governor Pat Brown to the LA Municipal Court in 1959, and served two years before moving to the LA County Superior Court, where he served for 18 years before retiring. He was also president of the California Judges Association in 1975 and 1976. Wapner attended Hollywood High School where he once dated actress Lana Turner. He earned the Purple Heart and the Bronze Star during WWII while serving in the South Pacific. Wapner wrote a 1987 book, A View from the Bench. He appears as himself in the second episode of Sliders, in an alternate world where the Soviet Union has conquered the USA and where The People's Court is instead a criminal court that hands out long prison sentences, and he is referred as "Commissar Wapner" rather than "judge". In 1999-2000 he apeared in national ads for Singer Asset Finance Company, and in 2010 Rocket Fizz marketed Judge Wapner Root Beer, featuring the slogan, "I sentence you to drink my root beer."

In the mid-50's as an airline stewardess, Joanne Copeland helped calm a first-class passenger, Howard Hughes, who shortly after arranged a screen test for her at Hughes' RKO Studios. After briefly working there, she later did some modeling in NY before marrying TV's Johnny Carson. After divorcing Carson, she moved back to California, hosted a TV show, and worked with charities. She rented a "writing room" to long-time friend, writer Truman Capote, who died there.


Helen Mack started as a child actress in silent films, moving on to Broadway plays, and touring in vaudeville. She appeared in Son of Kong (1933), The Lemon Drop Kid, and His Girl Friday (1940). Eventually Mack transitioned into performing on radio, and then into writing, directing, and producing radio shows. Later in life, Mack billed herself as a professional writer.


William Wayne McMillan Rogers III was an actor, best-known for playing the role of Captain "Trapper" John McIntyre in the first 3 seasons of the TV series, MASH. Other appearances included The Invaders, The FBI, Combat!, Gunsmoke, Have Gun Will Travel, Gomer Pyle, The Fugitive, and in the 1967 movie Cool Hand Luke. He was a regular panel member on the Fox stock investment TV program Cashin' In as a result of having built a career as an investor, investment strategist, advisor, and money manager.

Lyricist Jerome Leiber and composer Mike Stoller were songwriting and record producing partners for hits Hound Dog (1952) and Kansas City (1952) and later in the 1950s with The Coasters, creating Young Blood (1957), Searchin' (1957), and Yakety Yak (1958). They were the first to surround black music with elaborate production values, enhancing its emotional power with the Drifters in There Goes My Baby (1958), which influenced Phil Spector, who studied their productions while playing guitar on their sessions. Leiber and Stoller wrote hits for Elvis Presley, including Love Me (1956), Jailhouse Rock (1957), Loving You, Don't, and King Creole. They also collaborated on On Broadway, Stand By Me, Young Blood, and Spanish Harlem. They were inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame in 1985, and the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1987.


Trudi Marshall was an actress beginning in the 1940s in Heaven Can Wait, The Sullivans, and The Dolly Sisters, then Dragonwyck, and The Fuller Brush Man, among others. TV included The Donna Reed Show, Starsky and Hutch, and her last role in Willa. Originally she was a photographer's model, then a popular magazine "cigarette girl" during her modeling days for Harry Conover, as "The Old Gold Girl", "The Chesterfield Girl" and "The Lucky Strike Girl" at different times. Second husband was businessman Philip Raffin, and she was the mother of actress Deborah Raffin.


Deborah Raffin was an actress, appearing in The Dove, Nightmare in Badham County, TVs Foul Play, Noble House, 7th Heaven, and The Secret Life of the American Teenager. She was nominated for both a Golden Globe and Razzie for Touched By Love in 1980. She later produced audiobooks.

Born Patricia Brilhante, Patti Brill acted, with 32 credits, in minor bits including Sing Your Way Home (1945), Music in Manhattan (1944), and Hard Boiled Mahoney (1947). Her last credit was on The Donna Reed Show in 1960. During and after WWII, she was involved with caring for paraplegic war veterans, as was 4th husband Osborne .


Isabel Dawn was a screenwriter, including Singin' in the Corn, Don't Bet on Blondes, Girl of the Golden West. and Remember Pearl Harbor. She appeared in one episode of Cheyenne in 1958. She original worked at two newspapers, and acted on stage and radio.


Adolphus Wolgast, nicknamed the "Michigan Wildcat", was a Lightweight boxing champ. He turned pro in 1906, and in 1910 earned the championship. Wolgast defended the title against Joe Rivers in 1912 - they knocked each other out, and controversially, the win was awarded to Wolgast. Wolgast defended the belt 4 more times before losing it to Willie Ritchie in 1912. In 1917, Wolgast was declared incompetent and a guardianship was set up for him. He suffered a breakdown, was placed in a sanitarium from which he escaped, and was found living in the "North Woods" of California as a "mountain man." In the early 1920s, an owner of a boxing gym, took Wolgast "under his wing" and allowed him to train, though Wolgast never fought again.

Gene Tierney was an actress, best known for her role of the title character in Laura (1944). She was nominated for a best actress oscar for Leave Her to Heaven (1945). Her first film was in The Return of Frank James (1940), opposite Henry Fonda. Other films include Heaven Can Wait (1943), The Razor's Edge (1946), The Ghost and Mrs. Muir (1947), Whirlpool (1949), The Mating Season (1951), and The Left Hand of God (1955). Her final performance was in the TV miniseries Scruples (1980). She was named after a beloved uncle, who died young.


Anson Jones was a doctor, businessman, member of Congress, Texas Secretary of State, and the fourth and last President of the Republic of Texas. Later, after getting no election votes for Congress and enduring an injured arm, he shot himself. Jones County, and its county seat, Anson, were both named for him.


William Hobby was the publisher of the Houston Post and was elected Lieutenant Governor of Texas in 1914, then the 27th Governor of the Texas from 1917-1921. Hobby served as a member on the Board of Directors of Texas Technological College. The airport in Houston is named after him.

TV included several episodes of the Cisco Kid series, The Range Rider, Bourbon Street Beat, Peter Gunn, The Life and Legend of Wyatt Earp, Have Gun - Will Travel, Dennis the Menace, The Untouchables, My Mother the Car, Mission: Impossible,The Big Valley, The Wild Wild West, and Gunsmoke.


Ruth Foster won a dance contest at age 12, then acted in TV's Ben Casey, Little House on the Prairie, two Little House TV-movies, and last appeared on Highway to Heaven in 1989. She also edited episodes of Matlock, Jake and the Fat Man, and the documentaries Paul Simon's Concert in the Park, and The Rolling Stones Rock and Roll Circus. She was married to comedian Bobby Pinkus (Accardy).


Dick Kallman acted in movies and TV, including starring in Hank, Medical Center, and 2 episodes of Batman as "Groovy". He also recorded an album, and later joined a partnership to manufacture women's play clothes and party clothes, and also began working as a dealer in antiques, silver, and art. He and his partner were murdered during a burglary.
