She was a wonderful dog. More important to us than we realized until we lost her so suddenly. But she was not perfect. She could not resist chasing something noisy and moving, so she could not be walked in view of a street as she would be bolting to the end of her leash every time a vehicle went by. Deep in the woods, off leash, she would also sometimes dash off in pursuit of something, more often nothing, and take her own time returning regardless of our calls. Dahlia is a wonderful loving dog, but it will take years before she is as dear to us as Tralee. Because of the times of our life that we had Tralee, no dog may be again so much a part of us.

The dog retrieving a found tennis ball, which he always proudly shows me when he finds one, from his favourite pool, whereupon I bury it in the sand, he digs it out and repeat.....

My mom had a dog just like that, in the seventies. She lived on Portland Island in Dorset, a few yards from the beach. In the summer, she spent so much time in the sea, her coat would turn a reddish tinge from the salt.

Labradors; water and food, it's impossible to keep them away from either. The stinkiest green pool, the stalest most squashed piece of bread, magnets to a Labrador.
