leadbelly, I'm so tempted to PM you for the phone #. But no, not going to do it. (especially not with that one wild animal I have now in the house)

welcome Jimmy-d. Looking forward to you keeping track of his/her years here like many others.

I didn't realize that the 1st time I saw the 2nd photo... Wheaten's need rescuing?!!! Hard to believe. There's so beautiful. There's the most playful pup about 1/2 full grown in our NYC place. Great doggie!

Well, I guess I shouldn't be naive. All dog breeds have need for a rescue organization for anything from owners that get into bind to other screwed-up folks making for some really bad situations.

Steve-

Shamus was unfortunate enough to have spent the first two years of his life in a household where the father routinely beat the mother, the mother routinely beat the kids, and the kids had no-one to beat except Shamus.

It got to the point where both parents ended up in jail and the kids in Foster homes.

Shamus was returned by the State Police to the original breeder, who worked with experts at Cornell University, trying to solve his many mental problems (he had been turned into a vicious beast - his only defence, I guess).

I was going to buy a pup from the breeder, but when I met Shamus, I changed my mind. The breeder had worked with him for over a year, but was to the point where he had to find a home or ...

I asked about taking Shamus, and he reluctantly agreed. He warned that he would bite and need a lot of work.

Sure enough, on the second day at home, he lunged at me when I attempted to untangle a toy from his legs. Bit me on the chin/mouth and knocked out a tooth. He had given me warning signs but I had foolishly ignored them. Live and learn.

Now, after two trying years, he is almost normal. Still not over all his fears, though, but maybe some day. I don't regret adopting him for a moment, but there were times at first when I thought I had made a mistake in taking him in.

The Shamus Fund was started to provide funding for rescue/rehabilitation of other Wheatens. Full name of the breed is Irish Soft-coated Wheaten Terriers.

Tom, wow! Knocked a tooth out!? You are indeed a Saint. Major respect for seeing it through to this degree with all that effort on so many levels. It makes our wild & bratty adoption that sometimes inflicts significant bodily harm to our littlest one a lot less significant. Her 5 weeks @ doogie boot-camp did do her a world of good; so she could have been much worse is what I mean to say; but then again I think if she were any worse my wife wouldn't have let her stay around.

The pups were soooo adorable! But then she (my client) showed me the lineage, 15 generations of U.S. and Canadian champs! The price??? US$1000! Though she'll lower the price to $800 if you can prove you can take good care of the pup!
