Sad day here as we discovered our funny little kitty Astro was killed by a car overnight. We always try to keep her in but she has been very determined to get out and with the dog coming and going we didn't realize she slipped out last night.
Sorry to hear this, Matt. She seemed like a great pet and I always enjoyed your photos. Sadly, we had nearly the same situation with our cat Doc about a year ago. He would wait by the door and dart out whenever it opened. You do what you can.

On Thursday we said goodbye to Karika our Komondor. She had been sick for 11 months and could fight no more. The illness became too much for her. She was my shining light that could make me happy even in my darkest of hours. I am not quite sure what I am going to do without her. The first photo was taken just a few hours before we said goodbye. The second one was last winter in happier times, even then she still was very sick.
My condolences to both of you. It's always difficult losing a family member, whether expected or not.

Sorry to hear that Matt. We have two cats as well as the dog and the older cat is always trying to get outside. A couple of weeks ago he managed it when I had to make a visit to the ER via an ambulance ride. With all the commotion and to and fro by the paramedics he managed to slip through an open door. Thankfully my daughters spotted him in the front yard after I left in the blood box and coaxed him close enough to grab. It only takes a second and they are gone!

Thanks for the thoughts. I'm always conflicted about letting cats out. I really do think they lead more fulfilling lives when they have access to outside but then there's all the dangers to deal with. I was pretty sure a fox was going to get her as there is one in the neighborhood with a taste for cats (ours in particular, it seems). We don't get a whole lot of traffic and it's not usually moving vary fast so I wasn't expecting it to go this way.

We try to give the cats some daytime freedom and get them back in at night when the other predators are out but obviously that is a flawed system. I'd like to think they have enjoyable lives while it lasts and that appears to be true.

I only keep indoor cats now because invariably my previous cats got run-over, killed or mauled by something or someone, or developed a tragic illness that they picked up out there. I try to keep more than one so that they can annoy and play with each other while I'm gone.

Nice one!

All the cat talk here got me thinking about Doc, who we lost last year. He was a sweetheart

A box cat. A couple cats I've had were box cats. Laura was in heaven at Christmas, tried every empty package.
This little dog looks quite a bit like Jeannie. It's not ours. It belonged to one of the vendors at this year's town fair.

mattb 123 - Love that dog, lover of great outdoors, full of health and adventure.
D1N0 - Talk about disapproving! Cats seem to do two emotions well: totally content and scornful.
normhead - Enjoy seeing your dogs. There's always at least one of them that has a look of happy eager intensity.
