Of our first two Shelties, Vaila Brae had the "I am alpha" attitude, whereas gentle Maddy did not understand the notion of one updogship at all. So VB was always in the lead when both were on leash, and Maddy was given a quick warning if she got her nose up to VB's shoulder. ONE EXCEPTION: VB did not like rain, but Maddy could care less. So walking them in the rain it was Maddy in the lead, VB trailing with her head down until I would say "go home?" Suddenly VB came to life, tail up, leash pulled straight dragging her foolish human back to shelter, and also keeping Maddy respectfully in second position.
