Very impressive self-portrait, Stephen! Intense, great angle and light! Green eyes, I am not totally sold on, but I guess it is a matter of taste.

Here are some from a recent maths conference:

Most of these I really, really like. The go go dancers really made me smile. I think they're are all too great but that one of the guy in the white T-shirt is a bit disturbing. He looks like he's totally high on something. Something about the eyes is very off. I don't know that I'd display that one in the portfolio.

That's interesting. I feel pretty good about that photograph - the subject looks deep in thought to me. Of course, I'm not a professional photographer, so I don't have experience building a photographic portfolio. I am, however, a graphic designer. As such, I have sourced and licensed a lot of photos, and even directed a few photo shoots. I wouldn't hesitate to use that photo in an ad, if I were advertising something relevant.

Every picture has a story. That's just what he wanted. This was part of some shots for his Facebook page. He wanted shots like he sees with his rap music heros. He wanted them dark and contrasty. He kept saying too much light and got me down to a single strobe and a reflector. I had to throw out the typical portrait rules and experiment. That shot was one of the more "normal" shot of the series. He liked it and that's the bottom line for him.

I suggested this humors piece (who calls anymore - it's texting) and he didn't like it at all.

I thought tuco's portrait of the guy in the white tee was quite effective. A little unsettling perhaps, but there is something spiritual about it (or possibly high). Nevertheless, beautiful light, tones, good looking guy, so many things that work.

For something disturbing in a different way (I thought we need it after the lovely kiddies in bright sunny weather), here's one from me - these are the kind of people I work with...

with Schneider 50/0.95 at f/0.95 (with NEX-5n):

I really like the warm color. I've tried my Spomatic F Taks on my DSLR, liked the results and found extra purpose for them at the same time.

Agree - in fact I'd say this page has an exceptionally nice collection of portraits

Hmm... as much I would like to give you credit for the creative use of the smiley, you are pushing it a little, I must say, when you call it an "exceptional portrait".
