Hmm... as much I would like to give you credit for the creative use of the smiley, you are pushing it a little, I must say, when you call it an "exceptional portrait".
Really, I was agreeing with Dadipentak's remark that the shot Magkelly referred to was very good (). But I was referring to the whole page of this thread as an 'exceptional collection'. You know, playing it safe & not singling out anyone in particular .

Sorry Paul, this must've been another one of my jokes that was only funny to myself - I was singling out your saying "this page" while the closest thing on "this page" to a portrait was the smiley in your post!

sorry!

Ah-ha - yes, that would have been very clever of me if I'd done that deliberately! (but I'm not that clever) I guess I should edit my comments to read "previous page" since I didn't realize I'd started a new one. Thanks Daniel for enlightening me!

Every picture has a story. That's just what he wanted. This was part of some shots for his Facebook page. He wanted shots like he sees with his rap music heros. He wanted them dark and contrasty. He kept saying too much light and got me down to a single strobe and a reflector. I had to throw out the typical portrait rules and experiment. That shot was one of the more "normal" shot of the series. He liked it and that's the bottom line for him.

I suggested this humors piece (who calls anymore - it's texting) and he didn't like it at all.

Look at how bright his teeth are then look at the whites of his eyes. There's a really big difference there and I think that's what's making him look a little high in these. The face, the expressions and all that's fine, but his eyes are taking away from the photograph. Try making his eye just a bit whiter. It could be he's just sensitive to lighting and all. But it's kind of working against you a bit. His eyes look very irritated for some reason in these. Otherwise I like them.

Great to see this thread is still going strong! I haven't been on PF for quite awhile now that I started out my engineering career. So now I think I find it necessary to have to post a couple of photos again to hopefully get back into the swing of things.

Well, to keep with the happy smiley mood of this page, this is as happy as my portraits get:

The mad psychologist:

(with Schneider 50/0.95, @f1.2 probably ISO1250)

And Mini-me:

with Contax G 45/2 + flare

Took me a while to get behind the camera of late - work's been just as fun (and time consuming), so I just have the one to present for now:

Thank you all for your comments. The image was captured by the illustrious FA 31 ltd at f/4 and only minimally cropped. This is one fine and very sharp lens.
