An African butterfly that looks very similar to the NA queen butterfly which is related to the monarch.
The family resemblance is evident.

Dragonfly neither dry enough nor warm enough to fly.

An image that's much more web than web-spinner.

Got a new Metz 44 AF-1 Flash to use for macro and currently experimenting with a diy diffuser. Both are pure flash exposures, taken at f/11 ISO100 1/180 with the DFA100 Macro at max magnification.
Compared to shooting in natural light and high iso it's a whole new world...the percentage of grossly blurry images is almost zero, of course the randomness in picking the right focus plane handheld with razor thin depth of field is unavoidable, but at least camera and subject shake is eliminated.

(you can click for non resized version)

Quite pleased with this one in particular, it's a hard (6-7MP) crop but i never managed to take a similar shot before. Maybe i'll experiment with higher magnifications by putting some extension tubes onto the DFA 50mm .....

Nice jumping spider. From my experience, it's easier to find a way to increase magnification, harder to get the point of focus where you want it.

Thanks. That indeed is always the problem and it takes quite a bit of luck...

The quick and dirty diffuser i am working with is doing fairly well, found this dead bug around the garden and tested bare flash and diffused...the quality of the illumination improves dramatically

Went to the beach in Massachussetts last weekend, and caught this nice Grasshopper on the sand, taken with the Telephoto DA*300mm (so xposted with the 300mm + club)
It has a very good camouflage pattern for sandy beaches!

I think This is the right species, so if I made a mistake, let me know...

Amazing camouflage,Weevil. Great work on display in this thread, very impressive to this casual bug-shooter .

This guy seemed to assume a defensive posture as I tried to capture him on the flower:

Very small bug, personally never seen before. Cropped from 1:1 shot with the DFA 100 at f/16
