I've posted other images of this little leaf hopper, taken last year, but this one is pretty good.

Not sure what this critter, they appeared suddenly at Zoo lake, and quite a few of them scuttering in one corner of the lake.
Some time back when noel's image of a whirligig beetle was posted I promised to scan an image of one I had photographed back in the film era, then it turned out my scanner had gone dead. After some futile attempts to urge it back to life, I ordered up one of those ultra-quick little desktop digital converters, not a scanner but rather a simple digital camera device, dug out some my whirligig beetle chromes a converted several. Here's one that shows the sensory hairs that protrude forward from the head. Also evident is the near mirror-like surface of the elytra. I could not photograph the split eye because the water spread out vertically on the glass of the aquarium making it impossible to get an above & below water image.

Yes, a grub is an insect. Soil-dwelling such as the one you posted are almost always the larvae of a beetle. BTW: Beetles are the most diversified of the insects = more different species than any other group, and by a substantial amount.

Thanks Mar. I'm sure that you must have a " grub or three " in your extensive library of images that you can't use in this thread !! Please have a look and post some if you can. WOW. 2 hijacks in one day........................................I'm on a roll.

Actually, we have some grubs, nymphs and papas here so, I at least, consider them part of the insect world and they are welcome here.

Agreed!
Another visit to Walter Sisulu Botanical Gardens, and glad there are still a few insects around. Autumn is tightening its grip.

This fellow was too absorbed to worry about me . Tried prodding it a bit with a twig, and he showed me what he can do with those claw. More prodding and off it flew. X-posted from the Pollinators in action thread.
