A European Hoverfly. I assume that is it's mouth or tongue and not something else stuck near it's face.

Some not-bee shots from this past Sunday's excursion to the James Woodworth Prairie in Glenview, IL.

A threesome of Black Swallowtails. Well, not quite. The unsuccessful male left in a huff.
[IMG][/IMG]

It's not just the butterflies.
[IMG][/IMG]

An unidentifed Crescent.
[IMG][/IMG]

Sphex pennsylvanicus, the Great Black Wasp. Harmless, unless you're a katydid.
[IMG][/IMG]

The appropriately named Isodontia elegans, a beautiful grass-carrying wasp. Harmless unless you're a tree cricket, young katydid etc.
[IMG][/IMG]

A male Tachytes wasp - in the square-headed wasp tribe.
[IMG][/IMG]

Sphex ichneumoneus - the Golden Digger Wasp - also a predator of katydids. It ain't easy being a Katydid!

Experimenting with SR on and SR off at high speeds.
Found this tiny moth (about 1 cm long) that is quite colourful. Most small moths I see are not very colourful.

a possible useful tool:

All you have to do, they say, is whip out your smartphone and download the iNaturalist app. Created by the California Academy of Sciences, iNaturalist allows anyone to take a picture of an animal (or plant or fungi or whatever) and make an attempt to identify it. Then others, including experts, weigh in on whether your ID is correct or not. Think of it as a bit like Pokémon Go, only you’re trying to “catch” real creatures instead of Charizards and Vaporeons.

On the day of the eclipse, theapp will feature a special drawdown menu that allows you to record observations leading up to, during, and after the astronomical event. Simply keep an eye out for any interesting or unusual behavior and snap a few pics while you enjoy the show

Do eclipses drive animals wild? Here’s how you can help scientists find out. - The Washington Post

I can just remember when, as a kid, there was a massive outbreak of Japanese beetles, Everyone had out hanging metal traps, mostly green with one yellow "target," that filled with hundreds of them. Don't know whether that population explosion was relatively local where I was living (Long Island, NY) or was more widespread in the Northeast or across an even larger area. Although their numbers have sometimes expanded afterwards, I don't think there's been another outbreak of equivalent magnitude.
