Either no insects, or a million or more. A termite tower in Australia. Big ones such as this might be several centuries old. I could not locate exact ages for Australian termite mounds, but one in Africa has been analyzed and found to be over 2,000 years old.

ADDED AS AFTERTHOUGHT: Talk about a home being in the family for generations!

Yes! Also called a "pill bug" or "sow bug." and probably other more local common names. The genus Oniscus is common and widespread.

Species Polistes carolina - Red Wasp - BugGuide.Net
Red Paper Wasp. The Polistes wasps are great subjects, they're pretty chill. I haven't seen P. carolina around here but back in Ohio we used to see them.

Good thing Polistes are fairly chill. Their sting is big enough to inject a lot of very painful fluid

As I remember, in the Tale of Mrs. Tittlemouse, they are among the "creepy crawly people" who must be cleaned out of her cupboard.

This variety lives in Spain. Here we commonly call them "cochinillas".

Nice one WPRESTO - great detail! One the Jewel Bugs (Family Scutelleridae). This one is the Hibiscus Harlequin Bug (Tectocoris diophthalmus)

I see from the EXIF this was with the Panasonic G9. Was the lens Vario-Elmar 100~400mm you mentioned in another post?

I shoot mainly with a Panasonic G85 these days. It'll be a while before I get a 100-400mm.
