Cool Larry!

Why don't I see those around here. I did find a Gulf Fritilary once, emerging. And I have not see any catepillars for a few years.

The Monarch caterpillars have become pendants of jade and gold.
My favourite stage of their development. Nicely captured.

I've never had Monarchs myself until this year when a forgotten Milkweed I planted a couple of years back re sprouted and I saw a Monarch landing on it. Seems they may be coming back as there is a lot of attention on re planting milkweed for them. If you plant some maybe you will get lucky too .

Monarch populations have declined substantially over the past 50 years or so. Not sure that a smoking gun cause has been unambiguously identified although deforestation of the overwintering areas in Mexico probably contributes. I also suspect that housing construction (US population has doubled over past 50 years) has eliminated many vacant lots where milkweed once flourished. Those were the places where as a kid in the '50s I caught and observed monarchs when gathering specimens for my insect collection.

Butterflies in general have declined greatly. It's nearly all habitat loss. Whether vacant lots, marginal farmland left fallow, or the forests in Mexico where Monachs winter over, urbanization or numerous other scenarios the butterflies are hurting.
Garlic mustard and other invasives are also nasty - many can provide nutrition for adult insects, but are unsuitable as host plants for the larvae.

For something different, here's a really tiny spider, barely 2mm body length

Orchard Orbweaver, as far as I can tell - a new arrival in our backyard. Tamron Di 90mm.
