Glad to be posting more images, having resuscitated my flickr account and figuring out how to host photos from there.

The current mainstays of my macro shooting are the Sigma 70mm f2.8 and a reversed Kinotel 1.5" f1.9 8mm cine lens on 68mm of extension (an entire set of Vivitar AT 22 tubes). Flash on these shots has been the built-in flash with a Pringles tin extender plus diffusion. EXIF information for the Sigma sometimes labels it a 30mm, but shows the correct focal length of 70mm. The Kinotel I've been tending to enter as 20mm, though 40mm would probably be more accurate. I'm going to be doing some test shots of different macro set-ups to try to determine the best aperture for each one, trying to achieve the best balance between DOF and loss of IQ through diffraction. I'll probably be posting results on a dedicated thread the Macro sub-forum.

One of the things I've discovered is that having lenses that can deliver excellent results can really show up deficiencies in technique (not to mention dust on one's sensor). Chasing small, active creatures makes composition a challenge, too. Sometimes getting something with the eyes in focus at all is a minor victory, particularly with night shooting. If I'm lucky enough to get a pleasing arrangement of visual elements as well, that's very satisfying.

The Sigma is my first bayonet mount macro lens and my first with native 1:1 capability. Automatic aperture certainly makes shooting in the field a lot easier. The reversed Kinotel is a lot darker in the viewfinder and in live view, but gets me closer.

Not sure if this guy is a moth or a small butterfly but it wasn't shy and had no problems posing for me.

Looks like an Azure butterfly. Summer Azure Butterflies, Caterpillars, Chrysalis Photos : Gardens With Wings
Tiny, with blue wing interior?

Otherwise maybe a hairstreak of some sort - they're not shy. My Butterfly-Fu isn't really strong.

Bugs on bugs

Out the other night looking for bugs attracted by the lights on our front porch, I came across a biggish moth. While I didn't get any satisfactory shots of it, I did end up with an interesting, if disturbing, bycatch that I did not notice until checking my images later. The unfortunate moth looks like it was infested with some sort of parasitic mite.

Reminds me of a similarly afflicted ant (?) I shot last year:

Certainly looks like it. The wing interior was bluish-purple.

I found these one year and they're back on the Orange tree. Someone here ID'd them as Scale Pests. I'm not entirely sure cause I didn't look them up.
