While I was waiting for birds on that dead oak out back, I noticed some insect activity at the ends of some of the highest branches. I'd never seen that before so--since I was bored--I took some shots with the K-3 + Tamron 1.4x TC + F*600/4. The distance is about 35 meters. These are cropped to <1mp.

Either that mantis had an exceptionally big meal, or she's ready to deposit an egg sack.

I posted a bunch of Painted Lady butterfly shots in the K-3 Sample Shots thread, but rather than repost here, I'm opting to show you my latest insect shots. Been on a pretty good roll, if I may say so myself... As usual, D-FA 100mm WR, Raynox DCR-250 and off-camera, diffused flash. Second shot is a focus stack (seven frames).

This ladybug in a hurry refused to wait for my flash to recharge, so we've got some movement happening. I was walking backwards, trying to stay ahead of it while it was scurrying along the handrail it was motoring along.

My first posted photo with this "new to me" lens. A Macro-Takumar 50mm f4 on the K-3. Also posted as my first ever entry into the "Single in" Challenge.

My favorite insect in the whole world.

Pentax K-50 body with Pentax-DA 55-300mm ED Lens. This was fun. I liked the way it turned out.

Thanks for viewing.

If you you're expecting more insects from me - eventually. Attending to matters surrounding the death of my sister, when we haven't quite finished all the matters from the death of my sister-in-law, has put a crimp on my photo activities. Mostly a few captures when walking the dog.

BTW: The hoverfly is an enviable capture. I've tried that many times, and come up with fine examples of pure bokeh.

Not sure if that was directed at me or WPresto, but here's my latest. Not quite at the same level at the previous two shots, but hey... A near-macro "Bug In Flight", a (live) butterfly wing macro, and a non-macro shot of a huge darner dragonfly. I encourage you to go see the butterfly wing over at Flickr and click on the image there to see it close up. The details on these wings are pretty amazing, IMHO.
