The Sequel (?)

A while back I posted some shots of wasp activity on my dead oak and I've been keeping an eye out but none of the "regular" birds took any notice. Then, on Sunday...

It's a Scarlet Tanager, I think.

Camponotus fulvopilosus: Tawny balbyter

This is a large (8mm - 10mm) diurnal species of ant that feeds exclusively off nectar from fynbos. It has the unusual ability to actually see predator movement without the help of a shadow moving over it. If cornered it will squirt formic acid towards the threat. Spotted this beauty feeding on Euphorbia mauritanica or Yellow Milk bush which is interesting in its own right. Yellow Milk bush is reputed to be poisonous and only steenbuck and klipspringer are known to eat it. Bushmen use the latex (sap) solely for its cohesive properties. It has been suspected of causing deaths in sheep, but this is unconfirmed as there is another similar species that does have toxic sap.

Thank you! But I won't be able to stop at least until the end of the month. I am using it in the Single in...Challenge for October.

That was my first macro lens, on an Asahi Pentax S. The reviews in the photo magazine said, to paraphrase: "Don't be fooled by the tiny lens. There's a real gem down there."

I have only been shooting with this lens for a few days and I am inclined to agree. Its diminutive size and relative light weight make it easy to handle and the smooth and extensive extensive rotation of the focus ring really help to achieve sharp focus. I have yet to write any lens reviews here on the forum but am thinking that this lens may inspire me to do my first.

The lens review section only has the SMC auto-diaphragm model not the original double ring pre-set version, but I think the optical formula was the same, basically an inverted Tessar four-element, assuming the crown/flint combo was used in the cemented element. BTW: Sharpness rating by reviewers for the SMC 50mm f4 Takumar is 9.9 - no surprise. The four-element Tessar is surely one of the great lens designs.

A monarch down on the grass because, exasperatingly, all the fields in this wildlife management area were mowed a week or two earlier, cutting down all the milkweeds together with their monarch caterpillars. I could not tell whether this individual was dying, newly emerged, or a migrant passing through, but I suspect it was new as the wings were in perfect condition.

This looks like and acts like a woolly bear, but I've never seen one that was all black, not a trace of orange at the ends of the body.
