Originally posted by WPRESTO It looks similar to an insect here called a snowy tree cricket. Their singing - actually chorusing, there are scores to hundreds sometimes - in the evening generally marks the very end of summer in this area. The one in your photo must be at least a different genus, but it looks very similar. I've tried many evenings to photograph those fellows, tracking them down by pausing and listening, but they are really, really hard to locate. There is a formula that allows a reasonable estimate of the temperature by counting the number of "calls" one of these makes in a minute
Originally posted by noelcmn I think you are correct, but not able to track (yet) the exact genus. Probably subspecies Oecanthinae. Thank you! Who needs encyclopedia when you can utilise PF and a certain knowledgeable fellow from Messychewbits
Yes you are probaby Right, looks close to Oecanthus fultoni to me, i.e. the thermometer tree cricket...

The formula is to count the number of songs they make in 7 seconds, and add +5 to that number to get the actual temperature in Celcius...
There are other formulas for Fahrenheit units, but I do not know them...
It works, I've tested it more that once...
