little guy on my basil plant

I was getting in position to steady myself for this guy. and got this shot. which was ok but not enough light to steady myself after coffee.

So I turned on my strobes but he flew off only to land a few seconds later near the same spot.

We both got an ok capture

I was taking pictures of the lady slippers (AKA moccasin flower), but an alternate opportunity appeared.

I cannot at the moment tell you definitely what it is, but I can definitely tell you it is not a hoverfly (Syrphidae).

After a little look-in-book, I suspect that is either a horntail (family Siricidae) or a sawfly (Tenthredinidae) both of which are Hymenoptera = wasps, not flies. I'll do a little look-on-line and see if I can pin it down better.
photolady95, that's really an awesome shot! Lots of great detail. I agree with WPRESTO that it's not a hoverfly (Syrphidae). On a quick look it appears to be a sawfly but if you look closer at your photo you will see a knobbed filament called a haltere behind the wing (you can see it's shadow too - way cool). As you probably know haltere behind a set of wing makes this insect one of the Diptera = flies. Except for the color scheme, this fly reminds me of a black soldier fly (family Stratiomyidae), so my guess is that it's a type of soldier fly.

I posted a snip of your photo with red arrows pointing to the haltere and it's shadow.

Missed the haltere - careless of me.

Now I see those haltere! This last one has a beautiful yellow one. Do you suppose that helps attract a mate?

Yesterday was mostly spider action but heres a few.

A "ménage à trois" of Phantom Crane Flies...! It only lasted a few seconds, then the second female gave up trying to interrupt the first two.

The halteres, in case you don't know (apologies if you do) are also called "balancers," and have been so called for a very long long time. I believe that ultra-high-speed motion photography has revealed that they spin like a gyroscope during flight, so they probably contribute in some way to how flies fly (not necessarily "balancing," but perhaps "stability?"). That would makes sense because they are highly modified hind wings. However, that does not preclude other functions they may have picked up along the evolutionary trail.
