Those are really cool moths.

This may be a repeat (don't mind me just dumping posts to do my part towards the K-1)

We get a wide variety of so-called Eucalyptus Weevils, and while I think this may be one I can't match it with any of the pictures I can see online;

Transformations.

Yesterday evening as I went out to search for macro subjects, camera in hand, I came across an ant on a chair cushion on the front porch. It was moving very strangely, as if it were caught on something. Turns out it was shedding its wings, which were in a neat little pile until carried away by the wind.

Both images are cropped a bit.
Ooooh! Oh! Wow!

Our garden ants (Lasius niger) are swarming right now, and JUST yesterday I was thinking to myself: "I wonder what kind of luck it would require to find a new queen biting off her wings..." I would LOVE to get photos of that. And then you just went and did it!

Strange place for her to do it, though. I imagined the moment would be AFTER finding a proper place to found a new colony, and a garden chair seems like a silly choice...

Thanks. Field scabious is a really cool plant for insect photography. It has several associated specialists - in my area there are the moths, a flower bug and this bee, Andrena hattorfiana, which rears broods exclusively on pollen from this species. And then there is the armed nomad bee, a kleptoparasite that sniffs out the nests of this bee and lays its eggs inside the nest tunnels. I still have to find that one!

Tremendous job.

I did not posted new photos in a while...
I experimented the Pentax K-1 + PENTAX Helicoid Extension Tube K + Sigma EX 180mm F3.5 APO Macro DG
1/50s, ƒ/5.6, ISO 200 (natural light)

images stacking with Zerene Stacker (12 images, PMax method)

Just not sure how to calculate the image ratio with this adapter if the 180 macro is 1:1?

Found this fly hanging under an American Elm leave.

The insect has died in that position after it has been infected with entomopageous fungus that introduced the insect body.
We can see part of the mycelium going out of the abdomen. Sometimes, the fungus covers the entire body of the insect.

The technique has to be improved as when we zoom in, we can see some blurred bands on the leave. I will need to make smaller increments...

Good thing they cannot fly. Imagine them flitting about with those stinky feet hanging in the breeze.

They are quite endangered. Plenty of signs in Addo Elephant National Park, telling visitors to avoid killing them.

Another dragonfly pic. Hopefully the minor rain today was enough to bring life back to the yard. Normally this time of year we get a daily torrential dousing. This year its mostly tiny storms a few blocks across. I see the rain in the distance but not here.
This guy has some sprinkles on him that sun played nicely with.
