I wonder what the spider was thinking (well, data processing then) about for those 25 minutes - plotting revenge or counting blessings that fly was there to distract bug from eating her.

The fact it didn't run makes me think it knew it had a payday. It had made an approach while the assassin was there and might have claimed it but the cat followed me and bumped the web with his tail. It also took out a twig about 10 minutes before. My guess is it's use to much smaller insects. It's very timid.

An ambush bug nymph from yesterday AM. Up close it really looks like something from a drive-in sci-fi movie. BTW: It's perched on Susan's black eye.

Yes. Same insect I posted earlier, about its tongue/proboscis or whatever, flicking in/out like a snakes tongue.

Sticks out like a sore thumb on its chosen resting place. I wonder if it blends in better in UV than in visible light?

A Fly that looks a bit like a Bee and a diner co-habitating. Well the Spider got no lunch while I was watching. Cropped S.O.O.C. jpegs.

As far as camouflage to avoid detection by potential prey, it might make no difference if it is brilliantly colored and contrasts with the background (to our eyes). Insect eyes a extremely sensitive to movement, but are not much good at shapes. So a bright blot of yellow against a dark background may never be seen as anything more than that, that is, their nervous system will not see it as danger, or better, such a yellow-against-dark image will not trigger an escape response. However, if the ambush bug were to move a trifle too quickly, the eyes of potential prey would detect it and instantly trigger its wings into flight.

Blind luck: I was framing the lily - the entire flower - the yellow jacket came into the frame so I pressed the shutter ASAP. Got only this one image, but after cropping off more than half of the image, it's a pretty good insect photo.
