I haven't seen mantis since we moved to this house in 1959 when I was 9 years old, that was almost 60 years ago. I don't have any idea what happened to them, other than a guestimate that the chemicals they use to spray for mosquitoes could have killed them off. So, it's nice when you guys post photos of them in my thread, I get to see them again. Thanks for sharing them here.

Here is a shot taken yesterday with a FA 28-105mm lens heavily cropped of Paper wasps building a new nest on our backyard lily's.

It sure was, I don't think it was healthy. I see wing cases and wing pieces on the driveway this morning with ants cleaning up - we have a number of bird species with ranges that include our house that would make a quick meal of the little guy. So there was his 15 minutes of fame.

Yep - sure was big - as I moved it from the seat to the balcony post it hissed at me. A behaviour I have heard before in the rhinoceros beetle so I was surprised to hear this chappy doing it.

FYI: Some of those big "longhorn" beetle will stridulate if you grab them = they make a sort of buzzing noise.

This modest-size mantis was hunting dinner in the light above our cabin when we returned after an evening-to-darkness game hunt. It would jump-and-flutter up trying to catch flying insects that passed by. The AF had a hard time fixing on it, and I had a hard time getting it framed. This is by the far the best of multiple exposures.

Well, it looks like the insect season is pretty much over, now that the nights are freezing. Didn't even take the K-3 out since returning from bike touring in Scotland. So here's a leftover shot from earlier this summer. I posted another shot of this individual previously here, but I thought this one was pretty good too...

BTW, thanks to some help over on Flickr, it has now been identified as (very likely) a female Snipe Fly of the Chrysopilus quadratus species.
