Indeed! And a bombyle in French.

really high quality macro. Ever since I experimented myself with the Raynox achromatic units I have been recommending them to anyone starting out in macro. With good technique, they can give results indistinguishable from a dedicated macro lens that costs ten times as much.
Thanks! And when paired with a macro lens that costs ten times as much, they also do really well!

Pascal why would you turn off the SR when using flash? The only time I turn off SR is when my camera is on a tripod.
Because the duration of a flash burst is incredibly short, especially at low power. If ambient light doesn't contribute much to the total exposure, your effective "shutter speed" when shooting flash is unaffected by the actual length of time that the shutter is actually open (say, 1/160), but is rather determined by how long the burst of light provided by the flash is. Below 1/8th, which is the kind of power I'm typically using, a single flash pop typically lasts less than 1/5000th of a second (see here for numbers for specific flash models). So, for that incredibly short exposure time, SR is quite unnecessary.

Pascal I get why,
The flash eliminates the need for sr, as you said , unless trying to combine ambient as well, I hadn't thought of that, I might try it and see.

You shoot different to how I shoot. I see now why you not need SR on. Thanks for the explanation.

Found this this afternoon as I was out enjoying the garden before the rains come. Tamron SP90 and cropped.
Grasshopper?
A young one I imagine, about 6mm long in the body and 18mm including the antenna.

Looks a lot like what we'd call a katydid around here. But I'm no entomologist, so take that under advisement!

Also, looks exactly like what ffking posted at #5359

I came across a green tiger beetle drama this weekend. It was wild.

I promised my daughter to show her some green tiger beetles, so we went to a path where I know they like to hang out. The sun was out, and sure enough we quickly found a male, very active, pursuing flies and spider wasps on the sand:

We watched it hunt for a while, but suddenly it lost interest in the prey. It had caught sight of these two:

He threw himself straight at the male and attacked, but the female jumped into the air, and the pair landed a little bit further down the path on some moss.
The male was holding firmly onto the female with his mouthparts locked around her body between the thorax and abdomen.

But the second male pursued them, and this time his strategy appeared to be biting his rival's head off!

This time the male let go, the female flew off, and the two males engaged in the wildest fight I have ever seen anywhere, partly on the ground, partly in long leaps into the air. I got one photo:

They kept it going for a long time, and finally I lost them. Anna and I went along the path down to the beach. Later, on our way back, I came across this: A dead male, his thorax crushed, and a former prey species thinking (apparently) "well, who's eating who now?"
