I always envied the mayfly and dragonfly shots that so many of you post on here.
I just never seemed to get the chance,
While in the garden this evening doing my usual fly rounds I spot this guy on the hedge,:shock::shock:

Not the best shots by any stretch, but I was still glad to get them

Completely wrong setup, its too big to get him all in, didnt want to risk going to change, so I took some shots anyway, he finally got fed up and flew away.

Outstanding shots of the beautiful Ebony Jewelwing Damselfly. I got similar shots, I think these are newly emerged and still "curing" so they sit still. You won't have similar luck later!

Someone on Flickr identified this as a Stonefly (order Plecoptera), which apparently isn't even a type of fly (order Diptera)...! Not super photogenic, IMHO, but I did what I could.

I dont doubt it, having never had a chance before.
I was a bit dumb struck that it stayed still at all, makes sense that might be newly emerged.
Many thanks
Derek.

Reminds me of a "Peanuts" cartoon which I may report inaccurately (haven't seen it for at least a decade). In the first frame Snoopy is watching a bug fly by and comments along the lines of "There's a pretty little bug." In the second frame the fly has landed. Snoopy bends close and squints to get a close look and comments "Oooo," In the last frame Snoopy is walking away, looking down and mildly despondent: "He looked a lot better at a distance."

AND ALSO (because I could not locate the described Snoopy incident on line):

Ladybug (Ladybird Beetle) about to pupate. They are predators as larvae and adults. I think we all kind of freak out a little when we first see this.

Haha! Sometimes the reverse is true - many people are afraid of spiders, but once they see a good macro of a jumping spider, you'll hear "well, I'm generally not fond of spiders, but this one is really cute!".

And this one looks a bit awkward in flight, IMHO - and the larvas are somewhat freaky (see above) - but very cute adults when resting. Beneficial too! (Though Asian varieties are invasive...)

Lutea Odonata

Taken during my trip to Bali last year. Handheld w/ K-5 II + SMC K 135mm F3.5 + Extension tube.
At this angle I think the dragonfly looks like an attack helicopter...
