The one in the first pic always remind me of fighter pilots with a mask on and the pivoting wings.

Critter on A Coneflower

Update: I have been told it is a soldier beetle.

I have not yet identified this insect, found in a community garden in Midland, Michigan. The image was captured with a monopod-mounted Pentax K-S2 and an older Pentax 100mm macro lens.

Whatever it is, this is a very nice image.

Soldier beetle. There were all over here in minneapolis about 3 weeks ago, on many flowers but modtly on the milkweed.

=====
Hornworm invades pepper plant
One hornworm defoliated the entire plant in a matter of hours, then went to work on the peppers.
Hornworms are sphinx moth caterpillars.

Well, a combination of factors has meant that I've pretty much not gone out to shoot for the whole summer...! But last week I had a few moments and managed to find this ladybug who was (I believe) feeding on aphids. It even has wax-like "goo" on its face which is probably the aphid's defensive fluid! Didn't seem too effective against the ladybug... (D-FA 100mm WR, Raynox DCR-250, Godox AD-180, two-shot focus stack.)

It's always a treat to see the American Snout Butterfly - an unflattering but descriptive name.

Wheel Bug. Landed on the car's roof. Got a quick shot before he/she decided to leave.
