Challenge #52

I'm delighted to have the privilege of hosting Post-Processing Challenge #52. This challenge will be open for 1 week and will close at 12 PM PST on November 11, 2011. As usual, the rules are simple:

(1) All entries submitted before the deadline will be considered.
(2) There is no rule #2.

The prize? You get to host the next Post-Processing Challenge!

This photo I took, I was trying to capture the steam coming off of the fence posts.. what I got was a washed out photo with some slightly distracting bokeh.. So who's up for showing what can be done!

Shot 1 is the stock photo you can click for full size JPEG and DNG files.

Shot 2 was my quick crack at it.. coming back to it, I feel there can be a lot more to it! Good Luck!

For those hosting new challenges, here's the Mediafire Hosting login info

Here's mine: horizon straighten, conversion to B/W, different crop, levels/curves adjustments and then a LOT of burning in areas I wanted to de-emphasize so that the steam was more pronounced. I also added a bit of grain and further increased contrast using local tone mapping.

I didn't have any issues UL'n them.. but I also didn't DL them after and look.. hopefully everyone is having the same issue, then at least it's a level playing field! I could re-UL them, but I think that it would be best to let it be as is. Looks like atupdate got the whole image.. I guess you could always work from the jpeg I posted in here if you wanted.. never get the same levels as the DNG I guess.

I had the same issue and it made cropping it difficult. Okay, don't laugh. This is my attempt. I definitely like the b & w conversions best.

Okay, I haven't tried the PP challenge before... I had the same problem with a partial file, but the show must go on! I tried to embrace the steam thing and highlight it with a faux night look achieved by darkening the background and adjusting the temperature. The result looks a little bit like something from "Close Encounters" or maybe "X-Files." I imagine a UFO out of frame.

I always work from RAW so it was the DNG. I didn't download the JPG. Doesn't really matter to me, I probably would have used about the same crop anyway. I was just curious if it was just me, or everyone.

I worked from the JPEG because the DNG didn't load correctly with my program. I thought it was a program issue, as my DS doesn't have DNG.
