WOW! these are really amazing, especially given the original!

For those of you who might prefer a DNG file I finally figured out how to get it to load. Here is the link:

Here's my attempt. I just processed it in Aperture.
(1) Rotated so that reflections were aligned vertically
(2) Adjusted recovery and highlight sliders to recover some detail in highlights
(3) Adjusted shadow slider to recover shadow details
(4) Auto color (under levels)
(5) Boosted vibrancy
(6) Added sharpening

I did all this work before you uploaded the dng, so I reserve the right to take another crack at it using the dng. But, for now...

It's great to see so many new members participating. Wonderful image tessfully! I thought I would take a monochrome approach just to be different.

No Problem... you can just replace this image with your DNG version if you like. I won't be looking at any of these with a winner in mind till Friday.

thanks so much for participating!

Okay, here's my take.
I noticed most people didn't straighten the picture, or not enough. The perspective on rivers is always deceiving! I think only neek49 and kyc nailed it jmschrei is very close (love the b&w conversion by the way.)

The challenge with this image (pun intended) was that the sunny area (very yellow leaves) and shaded area (blue rocks) needed different color corrections to bring the whole composition together. That provided a base image that was a lot easier to play around with.

I hadn't looked at page 2 yet when I decided the same thing as Joe. I figured that you'd already looked at all the variations of a color shot since you really liked the yellow leaves. But, I too thought this could look good in monochrome.

The Wake of Earth Transformers

I did something else. I thought the original image could be used to create something imaginary and unusual.
'The Wake of Earth Transformers'.
When a receding perspective mirror photograph is rotated, an usual play of symmetry creates a new image, with symmetry working in a perpendincular direction to horizon. Our brain still continues to assemble the picture from top to bottom, in its learned and obedient fashion, but it gathers a different meaning now because the new perspective creates a new meaning.
Didn't want to change colours too much at all, just added visual clue to suggest the subject — a light beam from the eyes of an awakening Earth Transformer, rising above ground and lifting mountains on top of his shoulders
