I feel your pain. I was in the process of backing up my photos to an external drive when we had a power outage. The external drive survived, but my main drive was rendered unreadable. So, nearly all of my photos from 2014 and earlier are gone, save for the ones I posted to Flickr or Google Photos. I've tried all manner of recovery/rescue software to no avail. So, the drive just sits, awaiting the day I decide to try a data recovery service.

Data recovery is expensive. Cost me about $1300 and not all of the images were recovered. I lost one trip to Florida, about 4,500 images some of which I really liked. There were a couple other smaller batches that were also not recovered, maybe altogether about 5,500 image files.
