Challege 58 - The Streets of Barcelona

Thanks to Tim for hosting last week's challenge! I was surprised to win my first challenge, but it was very fun to partake and finally do more than just administrative stuff on the site for a change

This challenge closes in a week, at 11:59pm EST on January 8th. I'll post the winner shortly thereafter.

Original JPG Download

There's the photo, as I usually don't shoot raw only the original JPG file is posted. Good luck!

First thing I should do - if I would participate, and I don't usually - is straighten the horizon, I guess... Or are my eyes getting old? Got the idea it is tilted (slightly)....

I haven't participated in the PP challenges very often, but I couldn't resist this one. An earthquake toppled the street, so I fixed it . I also wanted to emphasize the steep hill, the tight crowded "canyon," and the juxtaposition between light and dark, so I cropped it. Minor curves, contrast, and saturation finished the PP.

My daughter has taken over my favorite PP computer for a school project. It might take me a couple of days to get to this one but I think I can come up with something interesting.

Here's a quick attempt from me. Cropped it to landscape to give it a more busy look, then did some PP to pull out detail and balance the shadows/highlights.

Before I wrote "I wasn't going for anything creative or artistic, just real to hyper-real" and posted a 'worked' image that popped but wasn't much different than the original. But after much work, it still wasn't something I was very happy with. I decided instead to apply an effect I often apply to an individual or group. I'm sticking with this.

I had some fun with this one. I used curves to boost the contrast and range, also boosted saturation a bit. I cropped this one to a square, thought it makes the scene more dynamic. Then I thought i'd add a Pentax Logo to the buiding at the end of the street, , fixed the perspective, and ran a couple of filters over it to give it a little bit of a weathered look. Something was still missing, oh yeah, this is Barcelona, the best football/soccer player in the world plays here! So I hung a Lionel Messi banner under the Pentax sign, fixed the perspective. I duplicated the background layer and put it on top, then used a mask to put the pole back in front of the Pentax sign and Messi banner. Then flattened the image for the jpg.

photo size?

How do you guys manage to load such large pics? My first 1024 px image was reduced to 700 px height when I uploaded it, hence the small size. I then reloaded a 700 px version that I had produced in LR. Thank you for your help (I will not modify my version for the current challenge).

I may be wrong, but I think attached photos can only be 700px high. so it makes a pic in portrait format look even smaller. My pic in this thread was much larger and reduced during the upload to 700x700. m80's photo is residing in his gallery, which can be 1024 high.

Correct-a-mundo. I first went the attachment route but was reminded of the 700px vertical rez max when doing so. So I went the gallery route instead.

Thank you Tom. I had not realized that before because the photos in the previous challenges were in landscape format. 700 px height in portrait does not leave much in width. It would be nice to be allowed 1024 px in either direction for the PP challenges. I am sure Adam is listening, but right, we can always go the longer gallery route, as shown by m8o.
