Well... I personally love the A 35-70, very compact, sharp, crisp colors, contrast and a macro mode. But then, the A 35-105 is a killer lens, nothing bad about it; gives you reach to 105 as well as a macro mode, simply a better lens. I would probably use this lens more as an everyday lens but it is quite heavy (not too large but all metal and glass) and sometimes feels cumbersome. Colors and that nice "portrait" sharpness throughout zoom wide open. The 35-105 is harder for me to focus, maybe slightly more than a 1/4-1/3 turn to go from minimum to infinity, so not too much room for error. Additionally, because it is physically a longer lens, you'll need either a steady strong arm or brace yourself on the lower shutter speeds; SR does help. The bokeh on the 35-105 is splendid!
If I never knew about the other, I would probably never miss it, if that makes sense
I 2nd the observations from theunartist. I had both the A35-70 f/4 and A35-105 f/3.5 (paired with the good ol' *ist DS). The "105" is optically superior (and will challenge even modern zooms) but the weight of all that wonderful metal and glass caused me to take the "70" out more often than not. Eventually I sold the 105 because the 70 became my go-to lens, leaving the 105 unused most of the time.

Extraneous info...
I ended up selling the "70" as well because I moved on to the K-r which made manual focusing difficult for me (YMMV). Then I acquired the DA16-45 and DA55-300 autofocus lenses which are great but I soon started to miss manual focus lenses. So I sold the K-r, moved on to the K-5, and will most likely acquire the A35-105 (and A35-70 f/4) again LOL!

Now that's a vicious circle

Interesting topic. I have only few that match the topic; many more if pix of dogs can be considered portraits. But here's one that, if all goes as planned, will be used on the back cover or inside sleeve of a book a friend of my wife's is writing about marmalade.

Pentax K-5 used @ 1/180s, ISO 100 -- Sigma 70-200mm f/2.8 (the HSM, non-OS version) used @ 110mm, f/6.3

Another one that was considered, but we didn't go with... (thus didn't get the same level of softening as above)

Pentax K-5 used @ 1/60s, ISO 100 -- same Sigma zoom used @ 135mm, f/8

Marmalade? I didn't think that it was known about in the USA. It's good to learn otherwise. We make cumquat marmalade almost every year from the cumquats in our garden. It's like orange marmalade, but cumquats are not as sweet as oranges. Lots of sugar in the brew. We miss a year every now and then when we made too much the year before.

I've seen these portraits before. I thought that they were great then and I still do #1 will probably sell more books.

That's very nice of you to say. Thanx.

Maybe it's regional, but I seem to remember "marmalade" as part of the normal vernacular from way back in the 60's and 70's ... perhaps largely because the now defunct restaurant & hotel chain Howard Johnsons would always have packages of 'marmalade' on the tables in its diner ... and my father would only eat and stay in a Howard Johnsons if away from home. Is it part of the common vernacular today? Hmm, that's making me think and you're probably right. It may not be part of the vernacular of a person 1/2 my age or younger. Its use may likely be even more regional today than it had been in the past.

In any case, that cumquat marmalade you describe sounds delicious.

Way off topic but marmalade is something I know from Poland and haven't heard much about it here in the US.

DA* 16-50. Available light in my brother's kitchen. Very jet-lagged and sleep-deprived photographer.
