A little off topic, but I figured y'all will indulge me. One of the images mentioned above was uploaded on April 27 and spiked 450 views in a short time period about 12 hours later and then went "dead" (
LINK). On a whim, I used the URL hack suggested by the Flickr "in explore" group and found that it had "bonked" meaning that it had apparently had been explored, but manually removed from the explore queue before it could be registered by scout or other services. Common reasons:
- Watermarks or photo borders
- Not a photograph (illustration or screen capture)
- Subjects that appeal to select enthusiasts (trains, cars, antiques, etc.) that are only "interesting" within that domain
- Group subscriptions with apparent intent to drive views/faves
In the case of my photo, the cut-off apparently corresponded to its acceptance at "Group with Experience", a very active (and actively moderated) group, the day after the upload. I suspect my image was nixed due to that last bullet above. Live and learn, eh?
The take-away? Avoid sharing photos to groups for a couple of days after upload
