The water seems to be falling over a rockfall of igneous rocks.

Did you know that Niagra falls over a rock fall of Silurian Age coral reef-like limestone? It is like the waterfall is mirroring what came before.

And the shale below being softer than the capping limestone is eroded out from under the falls, so the lip of the falls snaps off but never wears down to a rapids. It's a classic example of a retreating waterfall that maintains its drop. And in Iceland pretty much everything is volcanic.

I find that this link only works on my computer, and not my iPad. I expect it is just an iOS/Flash thing.
