Great shot, but hard to tell it's HDR. That can be the best HDR of all. :-)

I need to be less lazy and use a tripod for HDR but this one still turned out pretty decent I think.

It's a very nice effort. I particularly like how you froze the two waterfowl in the image, well done.

Tripods and HDR do go hand in hand but since I've had a K5 I've been able to do 3 image HDR +/- 1ev hand held very easily. It also helps if the initial shutter speed is on the higher end and the light level is not too low.

Well, here's the right place for this. I was out this past Saturday morning doing some shooting and a got these two images:...

Both of these were shot with a K5 and a DA*55 lens on a tripod at about the same distance and both are 5 image HDR series tonemapped with Photomatix. The difference is the bracketing order. Number 1 is the way I almost always do it with the camera in Av mode an the speed bracketed by the camera. Number 2 is with the camera set in Tv mode and the camera bracketed the f-stop. The difference between the two is in number 2 the tonemapped depth of field is soft but not fuzzy as in number 1. I actually kinda like the look of number 2. I hadn't really realized that the K5 was capable of doing this as I learned HDR on my K10d and have almost always shot in Av mode when bracketing.

Anyway, comment welcome and I hope this is a new concept to some as it was for me (you'd think after doing HDR for the past 4 years that I'da experimented with this before).
Wow, this is the best tip I've come across in months. Why didn't I ever think about this? Thanks! This is one of the reasons I really like this site.

Like I said, I never thought of that either. It just kinda happened.

Just back posting some of my HDR work since I didn't know this thread existed. I've just started doing HDR recently. I used to hate it so much because all I saw were those super surreal shots labeled as HDR photos, so I thought that's all it's capable of. I never knew that HDR can look very natural if it's done right until I started to play with it myself. Apologies if some of you may have seen them in the weekly threads. I know some of these can definitely be better if they were taken with tripod or with a better lens... I'm such a lazy bum

Here is my first go at doing an HDR image using photomatix. I've tried using photoshop CS5 a few times but haven't been able to get anything that I'm at all happy with, but photomatix seems to make it much easier to create a realistic looking image.

A bog in Yosemite Valley using Photomatix and 3 handheld images, -2, 0, +2 EV.
BTW, I experimented with the above versus using a single RAW image, and then making two duplicates at -2 and +2 EV. The 3 handheld images made a much richer and stronger result. There were a few artifacts with the single RAW version.

I visited the USS Iowa yesterday on the last public weekend to do so before she is towed to Los Angeles to become a museum. I got these (hand held).

That pump is a perfect candidate for HDR. Great shot, Eddie.
