If they were bigger or we were smaller, the various hawks & eagles would be really scary.

Nope, not the mouth of an herbivore.
11 hours from the preceding post to mine, so maybe this theme is beginning to fizzle, so

Modern - compared to what? Or who?

Some fairly modern architecture, then.

More modern stuff.

"Stuff?" You mean something modern that you can jam into a stocking?

A chainsaw run by a lithium-ion rechargeable battery. Beats spending fifteen minutes yanking the cord on the unit I retired. Although this one is much smaller and less powerful, it is much more scaled to what is safe for me to deal with now.

Nope, I'm using it as it is defined in Oxford's Dictionary:
1. (informal) used to refer to a substance, material, group of objects, etc. when you do not know the name, when the name is not important or when it is obvious what you are talking about.

The "etc" should cover most eventualities

And, as if you did not know, I was using "stuff" simultaneously as noun and verb. Several, perhaps many such versatile dual function words in English.

Few are as versatile as "stuff", though

I believe you'll find similar multi-function words in most languages. The problem is, I don't speak most languages, only a very few
