FYI: In teaching I've encountered numerous students who use animal as equal to mammal, so they never considered birds, fish, insects, worms, etc as being animals. And also, although not relevant here, many people do not consider humans to be animals, arising from the common phrase "man and the animals."

due to my training, education and lousy personality, I try to be as precise as possible in choosing my words and knowing what those words mean (which due to the English language isn't too precise ) and doesn't make me popular at times

I also don't worry about going with the crowd : you know the legend about the lemmings and the cliff don't you?
