Gold lunula, 2000BCE. This adornment is thought to be the direct predecessor of the torc. It seems originally to have been an ornament for women, then as a torc it became some kind of symbol of male importance, or perhaps a mark of a warrior. The torc (also spelled "torq") may also have developed some religious significance.
