But an advance was made when someone made a horizontal key that closed the circuit when pushed either right or left. That allowed a skilled telegrapher to type out messages even faster.
Yes! The early/mechanical version is called a "bug" (invented in 1904), here is a company that still makes them.

There are still quite a number of ham radio operators that operate with Morse code (we call it "CW"). Some use straight keys per my above photo, some use bugs and some use paddles, depends on personal preference. I can operate a paddle fairly well, marginal with a straight key and have never learned how to use a bug.
